I know Country Music radio if full of em, and some the more metal oriented "singers" seem to have some of the same phrasing. But the question is where can you find a genre that is devoid of that? I'm thinking it may be non existent.

Well, there's a thin line between "style" and "cliche"...even styles of music that try to be cliche-free (e.g., avant-garde experimental) end up being cliched in their attempt not to follow cliches. You can't win!

I think that a "genre" is in fact a ensemble of aspects that make it what it is. Those are cliches in a way. So you can't have one without the other. But some cliches are just more apparent and frequently overused so there are different degrees clicheness.

If there was a genre of music that didn't have cliches, it wouldn't be a genre anymore.

I think when people say "cliche" they are mostly referring to somebody who just parrots the tricks their influences and infuses very little passion into them. Some people can play a 12 bar blues and make it sound like it's never been done before, but those people are rare compared to the people who just do it because it's safe and they're boring. When THOSE people play it, it's a "cliche". When somebody gets it right, they're just playing the blues.

Lee as always, you put things into perspective. Yeah it was a lame new post in a way, because of the reasons you guys stated. I guess I too am part cliche, and part bluesman....hey we got it from somewhere! : )

I'm looking at the insert of a Robben Ford CD.

It says:

"Without our Musical Forefathers, none of us could play a lick. This record is dedicated to them."

I think we can all agree that Robben "got it right".
