I like the HHB radius 40, valve pre valve eq valve compressor, good vibe pre digital stage.. has valve 'drive' scope on the pre if desired... LOVES a Neumann TLM 103 mic... Jules

Thanks guys. I have a digital project studio at home and I would like to upgrade my mic-pre (currently a Peavey VMP 2). I am using it for vocals with a Audio-Technica 4033A. Also use it for acoustic guitar and direct bass. I run that into a DBX 160XT Compressor/Limiter. The sound I'm getting is OK, but I think I could improve the clarity with a new mic-pre, a tube compressor and perhaps a new mic. I've used higher end compressors and mic-preamps at other studios and they make a huge difference in sound. I don't have a ton of money to spend, but as essential as these items are, I was hoping to find some great quality at a reasonable price. Thanks again.

Hey Tone,
I think your focus should be more on your mic. The Peavey VMP is a nice tube pre, though it would be nicer if it had some clip leds. For $1000 you could get a serious mic upgrade and even a better compressor. I bought a RODE NTK tube mic recently (recommended by MANY on this forum)and have simply had fantastic results with it. It was only about $600 out-the-door and IMO worth 3 times what I paid. I think you will find that a good mic can literally transform your tones. From what I hear, RNC makes an outstanding compressor for just around $200 or less. Worth checking out.
Cheers.
