I've been using a Mackie 32/8 since '96 and would love to upgrade to a new console. Any recommendations in this price range besides the Ghost? Digital mixing doesn't appeal to me at this point.

Ray, I had a 32*8 and went to a pair of AW4416's... I'd never want to go back to all anaolg non-automated mixing at this point! It's amazing what I can do now that was difficult or impossible on the Mackie.

As far as options go, there's little out there in the sub $10 K range besides the Ghost and Mackie type stuff... IMO, you would probably need to either increase your budget, look at used consoles or reconsider your stance regarding digital boards. IOW, I doubt you'll find anything drastically better than the Mackie for under $10 K.

Yuk, the sound of digital boards far outways all the pro's of automation on a digi board...for me at least.

Phil, some ppl have a sequencer based studio, automation is not so important because u can do all that stuff in the sequencer.

Ray, considering Allen-Heath no longer produce the GS3000 recording console the next logical choice would be the Ghost. If you have to there is the Mackie.. Ghost sounds nicer imo

Test them out

Check out http://www.soundtracs.com and look at their factory refub units. They have a Megas Studio 32X24X8X2 for about that price probably including shipping. Don't know what the conversion rate from pounds to dollars is today. These things have a very nice mic pre and plenty of routing flexibility. Wish I had the space/dollars. I'd go for it as a replacement for my Soundtracs Solo Midi Production Console (24X8). You can download the .pdf file for more specific information. Certainly a large step above the Ghost, IMHO.

Thanks for the tips. I know I'd probably get used to a digital board if I went that route, but it sure seems less fun.

There are several great sounding used analog consoles for under 10k. If your going to get a soundcraft don't get the 600 it's a live sound board get a 2400. There are the Trident 65,75 and 24. all of these consoles are well above mackies and are about on the saem level as the soundcraft 2400. the next rung up the ladder would be a Trident 70 these essentially have the same guts as an 80 series and are constantly overlooked. You can also pick up an MCI 636 or a Quad Eight Pacifica for around 5 or 6k. You can then pay a teck a couple thousand to recap and restore the entire console to original specs. The pacifica is on the same level as an API very punchy and lots of head room. Neoteck Elans are around but they might be a bit out of your range.I would stay away from anything else Neotek makes in your budget, the II or III, because they are a bitch to work on. I saw an Amek Big with recall and auto for 7k a few months back that might be a good alternative if you need the auto.
all of these consoles are going to sould vastly superior to a cheap digital console. The only drawbacks are they are big and heavy and you'll need to spend time and money overhauling them to get them back into tip top shape. But once you do they will last a long time, be reliable and you won't have to deal with any complicated digital bullshit. If you get the Trident 70,elan aor pacifica you can sell all you outboard pres and eqs because the ones on the console are very high quality

The Series 600 is not a live board.
You may be thinking of a series six, five or four etc...

True, the Soundcraft 600 is not a live-sound console, but I remember a place here in Seattle where they used to call it a boat anchor. There are better ones out there in the used analog market. My vote goes to the Trident 24.

I am sorry things did not work out with the Ghost, though. Did you ever solve that RF problem you were having? A friend of mine has a Ghost 24 at home, and I always enjoy working over there. Seattle is a notoriously bad RF environment; maybe we're just in a lucky neighborhood...

Just curious,
Would you prefer a Soundcraft Series 600 over a new Mackie 8 buss?

That's like asking me if I prefer lima beans or brussels sprouts.

Well, the console I have now is worse than either of those, so it would be a tough call. And at the moment I need 48 tracks of hard-disc recording way more than I need a new console. Ask me in a few months, when/if we get to mixing all this stuff....We'll be lucky to have ONE song done by then...

Forgive me, but I remember George Peterson of "Mix" once called the Soundcraft 600 "the Chevy Nova of recording consoles," or something like that. I guess the Mackie must be a Geo Metro, and the Behringer is a Yugo, etc...

Whatever,

Sorry Rebonn but the Soundcraft 600 IS a live board. here's one in a road case on ebay. Where is the Patch bay? If your talking about spending 10k on an analog console you better expect to get a full TT patch bay, a stand and a seperate power supply at least

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1441294584

Could you use it as a studio board yes I suppose but by the same tolken you could call a 4 track cassette a recording studio. I used to own a soundcraft 1600 which is a studio/live board and it is way more studio than this board ever could be. 10k is a decent budgett for a used analog console in this market. A lot of people are dumping grat analog consoles for peanuts and are getting Pro Tools or digital boards. Every board I mentioned in my last post are light years beyond a 600.
Trident 65, 75 and 24 are the same circut design. An MCI or a Quad 8 would be far superior. Amek Angela would be a nice choice if you could get one or that price

I thought it was a well known fact that the 600 was a recording mixer.
I guess not.
The manual states it's a recording mixer for smaller studios (16 track)with nothing but recording application instructions, ie: tracking, tape returns, monitoring, control room mix, overdubbing, remix etc...
Just because it doesn't have a patchbay doesn't mean it's not intended to be used as a recording mixer.
The Ghost comes without one. You can add a patch bay to anything.
In the link you provided, under Soundcraft, 600, the one referenced has a built in patchbay!
The 600 does have a seperate external power supply.
Just because the one on ebay comes with a road case doesn't mean it's a live mixer and not a recording mixer.
But I do agree the other mixers you listed are better than the 600 but also more expensive.
For a new recording mixer under 10K, the Soundcraft Ghost could be a good contender and still have a couple thousand leftover.

Does anyone have an opinion about the Ghost? Would it be a marked improvement over the Mackie 32-8? That's what I'm trying to replace.

Kid Music:

It depends on what you're after, but IMO, the Mackie isn't a BAD board for the $$ per se, it's just that you may want "better" after using one for a while. The preamps are fairly clean, but to many people, somewhat lacking in character. The EQ is pretty sterile, again, somewhat lacking warmth and character.

I had one for several years and did do some good work on it, and I suppose if you wanted to track with outboard preamps and EQ's it might be a good choice (playback monitoring, etc) but I prefer doing that with a digital board since I get to use all the cool outboard preamps with it AND get the benefit of automation.

And FWIW, before the Mackie, I had a Soundcraft 600 in the studio that I used daily - it's definitely a studio console, although you could use it for FOH if you wanted to.

I agree with the comments about the Mackie. I find the EQ to be harsh and non-musical. I've done lots of good records on the Mackie and it doesn't let me down, but I'm ready for a step up.
I just bought the Radar 24 and got the analog I/O that sounds sooo good. I want a new analog board to live up to those converters.

ray dsr, The radar is a pro level digital recorder and if you want to get an analog board that will be on the level you need to get a pro level console. the ones I mentioned earlier in this post would be great consoles for you. Do some research and see if you can actually find some studios around where you live and have a listen to them. MCI, Trident, Quad Eight, Amek are all great boards that can be had in your price range. Don't get a "vintage" analog console that was low or lower midrange to begin with when you have the budget to get a nice "vintage" pro console that was upper mid range when it originally came out. Quad Eight pacificas, for instance, sold for 80k in the late 70's early 80-'s. that's a very expensive board even by todays dollar much less to the early 80's dollar. I recently picked up a Trident series 70 for half of what your going to spend. It's a great console and has the same electronics as the 80b series. call paul at odyessy pro sound I think he has one listed for $7500 if it's not taken yet.
