I've been using one of these little buggers for...hmmm...could it be over 20 years?!? Anyway, when I go to gigs I still double-check to make sure it's in the guitar case, right next to the replacement strings. I use it to make rude sounds as well as do the sustained note thang.
Anybody else a fan of this mysterious little string driver?

YES!! I have one too and like to have it handy to pull out at odd moments. Between that and my Echoplex I can pull out some real weird noises if necessary. And probably sometimes when it's really not necessary.  But actually it can be quite beautiful when applied tastefully.
Glad to know I'm not the only one who's got one stashed in the front of my gig bag!

I love my e-bow, but I can't remember for the life of me what the hell I did whith it. I know it's around the apartment somewhere, but then so are a lot of things.

I just started using one about 6 months ago... grabbed a used one laying in a guitar store display case on a whim... (gee, maybe I should have paid for it). I'm really digging it... mostly learning to create Brian May/Godley & Creme-style harmonized lines with it. Now if I could just figure out how to run the vibrato bar at the same time and not drop the E-bow, I'd be cooking.

Yeah, been using one ever since I saw Black Oak Arkansas use them years ago. Of course I've went through a few. Cool toy, though I've yet to use one live. I heard someone using one on record, the song was God Shuffled His Feet, by the mmm mmmm mmmm band......cool stuff.

I've also used the E-BOW for some 20 odd years!
Love the little guy! Used it on a recording just
the other day!
Recently got a Fernandes Sustainer guitar, very
cool, but a different animal!
The Fernandes(for me anyway),enhances the guitar/amp
qualities(sustain,feedback,etc.)where as the E-BOW
transforms the guitar into a MAD BEAST!!!!!!!
BRAINFLASH, why didn't I think of this sooner?
gonna try the E-BOW with the FERNANDES!!!!!!!

I love the E-bow, been using it for quite a few years. I've got a chrome one, and a black one. They're making them in white now with a new harmonic option on 'em, I'll have to pick one of those up. Bill Nelson is the reigning king of E-bow in my opinion.

I also like the sound you get when you turn the tone control for minimum highs.
The thing that's appealed to me most about the E-Bow is how nuanced it can be. You can really develop some very refined techniques with it, like pushing very gently down on the string to get some "mechanical distortion."

I'll have to try that next time I'm recording a gtr with E-bow. Sounds like some cool textures!

I've been using the Ebow for about 8 years or so.
In all the recording I've done in that time, I've been playing all of the instruments myself. Not being a keyboardist in the traditional sense, I have to learn how to play every time I use them in a song.
I can't remember the last time I didn't double the keyboard parts with that crazy little thing.
I also recently started working on a cover of Wichita Lineman. I'm using the Ebow on four different guitars, to simulate a string arrangement throughout the song. I'm getting phenominal cello sounds off the acoustic.
An invaluable tool, no doubt.

Great little device. I can't believe it's taken me so long to bother to get one.... Thanks again, musicplayer.com and kudbya...
I wish they would put the switch on the side where your fingertips go, to the left so you can switch harmonic modes while using it - or make the switch larger and slightly easier to throw.

I've had my ebow for over a decade, and love to fiddle with it. However, I've never been able to gain real competency with it. The demonstration tape that came with it was amazing! So far I feel like the kid that buys his idol's guitar, because his idol sounds incredible. I can hold it, but someone please HELP! I have continuing frustration and put it down for a year at a time!

You GOTTA use good batteries running at close to full juice for the best results. Alkalines are a minimum requirement. This is important, so that as you learn techniques, they are repeatable.
Pushing down, or backing off, on the E-Bow (i.e., perpendicular motion compared to the face of the guitar) makes a huge different in how the string responds. I'd concentrate on getting good at that move, and finding optimum pickup "hot spots."

HOLY CRAP! I JUST TRIED AN EBOW FOR THE FIRST TIME!!!!! There´s no end to the creative posibilities with this thing. I will never record another keyboard pad again!!! Layering notes, filtering (moogerfooger style), automating reverb and delay..... HOLY CRAP!!!!!

Who remembers a big hit from...uh...1982, I want to say...called "In A Big Country" by a band named Big Country? Their whole sound was all about the E-Bow. In fact, they were a Scottish band, and the E-Bow had a definite bagpipe feel in their recordings.
Strangely, I've never used one and always wanted to. Maybe I'll schlep on over to the local Big Music Gear Dealer and pick one up after I get back from hell...I mean, Summer NAMM.

Yeah...just did a moody track with 2 ebow Precisions panned hard L/R, and the sound is HUGE...Great for a Lanois-ish kind of feel, and on bass, you really can't tell it's an ebowed bass.

Try using a slide with the E-bow to "countryfi" your song. You can get some cool pedal steel effects with that and a volume pedal.

The E-Bow is definately a cool tool. I got one about a year ago and I'm just beginning to see it's potential uses. We used it on one of our songs if anyone cares to listen. It's called "Pleasure" and it's on our Javamusic site listed below. (Thinly disguised shameless self promotion?)
