How about this one...

"Major DAW manufacturers agree on cross-platform cross-application interchangeable file format. In addition to audio, this format will allow mix and effects settings transfer between ProTools, Paris, DP, and other software-based DAWs as well as standalone units like the Tascam and Mackie 24-tracks, the Yamaha 4416, and the now-shipping ADAT HD24."

Can't pass this one up...

"Hammond - Suzuki announces they'll manufacture new Leslie speakers using good-quality plywood and two-speed AC motors made according to original blueprints. The dimesnsions will be compact enough to fit in the back seat of the average sedan"

"Sultan of Brunei ressurects Opcode. Comments 'It was a spiritual awakening and profit is not an issue.'"

"Los Angeles based Rhodes piano shop 'Major Key' releases Harold Rhodes Memorial / Donald Fagen edition suitcase piano. Active high-quality preamp with balanced stereo outs is built in, and includes compression, phaser, and chorus electronics." (Major Key is a real L.A. shop, and to my knowledge was talking about releasing new Rhodeses. I've actually dreamed for a long time about a Rhodes with these features.)

"Sultan of Brunei buys Musicplayer.com, Keyboard, Guitar Player, EQ, et al from United Entertainment Media. Triples staffer pay and rate for accepted submissions. Calls it a spiritual awakening; says profit is not an issue."

"Operatives from Area 51 covertly take blood sample after Roger Nichols gets paper cut. Analysis reveals extra-terrestrial DNA. Now we know why he gets such great mixes."

- Clavia announces Nord super-duper megalomaniacal modular deux featuring a fully featured sampler with HD streaming real analog filters and a 19 in. touch screen wich will contain 80's virtual star "max headroom" for your entertainment pleasure and spiritual guidance. Also it will feature a zillion voices 16 part multi timbral and if you fold it out it will function as a mini grill worthy of George Forman. Oh and it also has a kickin 32 track sequencer.

-Roland announces the "ZARATHUSTRA" an all in one 48 track daw, sequencer, physical/VA modeling synth, and massive sampler. And it fits on a wrist watch so you can compose while jogging and it will even moniter your pulse.

- Digidesign announces that they will release a version of pro tools thats host based and has more than 24 tracks. They also release softsynth thats modeled on korgs mono/poly.

-Yamaha does a hostile takeover of clavia and fits the nord megalomaniacal modular deux into an rm1x size frame sans virtual personality and grilling capacity.

-The standalone daw manufacturers(roland, akai, yamaha. korg etc) decide they need to make their stuff more sexy and so they invent a plug in format open to 3rd parties and build their units with dsp expansion slots wich are compatible with all their units in a universal manner :-)

"NAMM attendees and vendors offer a moment of silence, after listening to 10 minitues of musical selections from the deceased, John Hartford, Johnny Russell, and, of course, Chet Atkins." RIP.

(It was difficult to get the news of Chet and Johnny in the middle of a 3 week run, when I could've paid my respects in Nashville.)

Here's one I'd like to see...

<< Music Software Manufacturers Create Computer OS

At a press conference today, Steinberg, Emagic, Cakewalk, Digidesign, and Mark of the Unicorn announced a new operating system for both Mac and Windows that is designed solely for music-related applications.

As Charlie Steinberg explained, "We all got tired of dealing with Microsoft and Apple, who seem to care very little about pro audio. So we took the best parts of the BeOS and modified it to be music-specific. Actually, quite a few sections are lifted directly from the Atari 1040 OS."

According to Mark of the Unicorn, "The final straw came with OS X. We realized that if we didn't come up with an OS, we'd be forever beholden to two feuding corporations."

The new OS is not without its limitations. "It won't run the AOL client, it could care less about photographic quality printing, and would make possibly the world's worst web server," commented Clint Ward of Emagic. "But you should see what it does with plug-ins. If you need that other stuff, just make a dual-boot system."

The new OS is currently shipping. No updates are available because so far, no bugs, or even crashes, have been encountered.>>

Here's the news item I'd REALLY like to see:

<
Due to a changing jet stream condition bringing cold artic air well into the southern part of the United States, Nashville is experiencing record low temperatures for mid-July. Daytime highs are in the high 70s/low 80s, with lows around 72 degrees. Humidity has stayed around 75%, highly unusual for this time of year. Because of the dryness, precipitation is expected to be well below normal.

These conditions are expected to last until Monday, July 23rd.>>

This is funny Craig because we actually DID just have a cool snap this last weekend here in the deep South. This is highly unusual for July. Unfortunately it only lasted a day- Saturday and now it is back hot and muggy again. I slept Friday and Sat nights with my windows open and almost took a chill!
Also I loved your post about the OS for music. Didn't I really read something about someone working on that a while back. Is it not actually possible? Great idea!

Now ya'll jus gonna have ta quit ya bitchin bouta heat, cause we don' wanna hear it.
hum

"When is a stand alone DAW more than a DAW? When it is actually a computer/control surface/digital mixer/sampler sequencer. In a joint effort by Yamaha, Motu, Apple, Dell and Akai, The AW4424G4P4MPC is built around an O2R digital mixer but is much smaller. It is a stand alone digital recorder/mixer that is also combination Apple G4 and Dell P4 computers. Just add dual monitors and mice for simultaneous mac and windows applications. The mixer/recorder then becomes a control surface for software applications. With its built-in pads it is also the next generation Akai MPC5000 sample/sequencer. For limited time it comes bundled with two 17" flat panel displays at no extra charge"

Kurzweil Technologies introduces Ray Kurzweil's Cybernetic Producer , a software package which will algorithmically make production decisions in the style of famous music producers. Simply pick a "Producer Personality", allow the software to "listen" to your current mix, and let the Cybernetic Producer do the rest!

Say goodbye to the days of banging your head against the console when a song, arrangement, mix, or performance isn't working! Simply let the Cybernetic Producer listen to your work-in-progress and help shape your "sound" with suggesting the next step to take!

The included "Producer Personalities" include Sir George Martin, Brian Wilson, Quincy Jones, Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, Phil Ramone, Mitchell Froom, David Was, and Burt Bacharach. Upgrade to Cybernetic Producer's "Premium Edition" and receive 50 additional producer personalities plus the ability to analyze music and algorithmically create new "Producer Personality" models!

Also included in the Premium Edition is Ray Kurzweil's Cybernetic Session Musician program, which is launched secretly if the Cybernetic Producer does not think you can play your instrument as well as you should.

Ray Kurzweil's Cybernetic Producer retails for $14.95.

This isn't *too* far off the mark, although it's being created by Linux hackers, not music software manufacturers...

http://slashdot.org/articles/01/07/19/1527233.shtml

It's idealistic, it'll probably take years for these kinds of projects to catch up to what you can do with Windows or Mac today, and it doesn't have the all-important support of 3rd party manufacturers (for things like plugins, drivers, etc), although it's free... If a DAW manufacturer or two put their support behind a project like this, it could happen... But I'm not holding my breath.
