We've had a lot of major studio gear changes in the past 20 years: MIDI, digital synthesis, drum machines, samplers, digital recording/editing, affordable digital multitracks, DAWs, soft synths, AutoTune (gasp!)...
While our gear is going to get faster, cheaper, and have better specs than what we own now, much of it seems like it'll be a repeat of what we already have: A workstation which records at 384k/128-bit? OK, those are better specs than what you can buy now, but it doesn't really change how we record.
So what's the next frontier? What's the next revolution in studio equipment? Or are we near the ceiling as far as what can be done?

i'd like to see more portable/battery-powered gear.
i think that the further the home/project studio takes hold of the market, the more products there will (or should) be to allow for tracking in better rooms than the basement/bathroom/kitchen.
i'd like to be able to track in a high school or college auditorium, or in the public indoor pool, or while i'm spending the weekend at my parents place, or outside. all of these things would be aided considerably by battery-powered gear.
there are already some mics that use 9V internal power, when will the price come down and the track count go up for portable/battery-powered gear?

1. devices that communicate over a single high speed medium (data + error correction, locate points, synchronization) ; higher levels (speeds, proliferation, market saturation) on intra & extra connectivity.
2. more "virtual" devices (ie plug ins)
3. comprehensive software liscensing - with real time verification.
4. gear that consumes less power.
5. breakthroughs in surround sound / 3D modeling and replication
6. same ol stuff. the GAS (gear acquisition syndrome), the built in obsolescence, the software Rev 1.12, rev 1.2, upgrade 2.0, 2.1, 3.0.
7. manufacturers telling people they can't make good music/hear correctly/capture the essence without item "XXYYZZ"
8. too many bands, too many record labels, too many bad deals.
9. too many fools (me included) that go to the local audio/music store and purchase stuff - only to park it after 2,3,6 days/weeks/months while the credit card bill needs to be "serviced" for another 60 months....
10. Too much to do, too little time.
11. youong people will still have energy and drive, but lacking in wisdom & experience. "Old" people will (still) have the converse while wishing they had their experience, wisdom AND youth. Not gonna happen....
