Here's a little experiment for you daw users. It's driving me crazy and I neec to know if this is a common problem with other (I use VST) daws.

Take a midi track such as a snare or bass or whatever and record that track back to a daw audio channel using whatever console or hardware you use. Solo those two tracks together and tell me if they are...

A. Severely out of sync...i.e. recorded audio late comparitivey
B. Slightly out of sync
C. Seemingly in perfect sync.

When I record midi tracks to audio tracks in VST the midi tracks are always late, causing me to shift the audio track earlier to compensate. This is very confusing to me seeing how my vocals or other instruments that DO NOT originate from VST midi tracks are always in perfect time.

What the hell is going on?

VST midi track -> d8b direct out-> to 2408 lightpipe -> VST audio track (ALWAYS LATE)

Audio -> d8b direct out -> 2408 lightpipe to VST (ALWAYS PERFECT)

My question is this...once that midi note(s) become audio into my console they are no different from someone "scatting" a note through a mic. The console doesn't know the difference. If I hear it in time while recording, why does it play back late? By the way...bouncing audio channels does not cause this delay, only when recording midi tracks into audio.

Is this an inherent problem with VST? Argghhhhh!

Luckily, I haven't experienced that problem. But my guess is it's a problem with the "MIDI to Audio Delay" parameter setting. Go Options > Audio Setup > System. Click on Help and see what it says about using MIDI to Audio Delay to solve problems caused by late MIDI playback. This was intended for use with hardware that has MIDI delays, but possibly it will fix your problem as well. Or, possibly the parameter was misadjusted at some point.

Let us know whether this helped or not, now I'm curious.

I onlu noticed this problem when moved a project to PT from VST. When you zoom in you notice that none of the audio tracks start on the bit. Furtenlly the dely is not notichable when I record midi to audio but it is there.
I guess it's got to do with your midi setup, ie if you try to run many devices through one midi port / long cables etc... could also be conected to audio card letancy, so I've been told - but I can't see how
My only advice is - see if it is consistent, is the dely always the same. Then follow craig's advice if not check you midi setup (fevurite midi timing in audio setup etc...)

I went back and took another look and found that I have a delay of 1255 clock ticks (I think it's a 1920 ppqn clock) at 120 bpm. I got this figure by zooming in on two audio tracks and measuring the difference. I have no idea how to get to a millesecond figure from there. Once thing I was mistaken about though is that the audio is also delayed when bouncing or duplicating tracks within VST.

I suppose the delay is the latency from my d8b / 2408 setup.

Dunno.
