Just wandering if you guys ever bought music that you just heard online?
I have to admit that only now I'm getting into internet radio and so far only heard know commercial stuff or realy expriment, which didn't convince me to buy. As for mp3 that I liten to on forums, usally they are in the demo department, and eventhough fun to listen to are rarly itching my wallet.

So am I wasting my time by promoting my Wife's music on the net

Thanks for any replys

I buy 99% of my music online, but as far as hearing something on mp3.com, internet radio, or whatever and then wanting to buy it... That only happened once, and it didn't even work out. The artist was from Norway and I'm from the U.S. and it got too complicated/expensive to convert the money over.

*However*... I'll often discover new music through a friend's recommendation, interviews with artists who I already enjoy, or by music reviews/music webzines. I'll almost always purchase the CD online, as it's pretty much impossible to find non-mainstream releases at local record shops...

I don't know that you're "wasting your time" promoting your wife's music on the net. I think of it as one more alley to wander up, one more medium to use. What I wouldn't do is use it as the main/only source of promotion. The internet is pretty glutted.

What I'm for is (for me) more regionalization/localization...instead of shooting for supporting national acts...shoot for heightened support of local/regional acts.

Why? I thought the idea behind internet is to shorten the distances... and since our music is avialable through our website to the all world...
Anyway, we're located in Belgium, but Darling Nikkie's bigest fan base is still the US.
No, I'm letting the record company hightened the local support, and I in my time help with the universe of music-loving-people
Did you listne to any of her tracks ?

In response to the first part...

For me, it's about supporting your local scene...not that the internet can't bring more artists around the world into our collective living rooms...yes...but, I like the idea (and this again is just my personal preference) of taking some of the wind out of big national acts' sails (not a lot, maybe a puff or two) and putting it behind local talent. When you're talking about recorded stuff, it doesn't matter, but for playing live and building a fan base, it's not likely that anyone from, say, Brazil for instance, is going to be coming to Kansas City any time soon, or vice versa. I still think that a good way to build a fan base is by performing live. How does one compete with the billion other acts online? Even if a given act is head, shoulders, torso, legs, and feet above others, they're still just another band on the web until you hear them and decide for yourself. And tons of "reviews" saying "this act is the hottest unsigned act on the web" are meaningless, because every other act, fantastic and mediocre, is saying the same thing. Again, this is just my personal opinion...and mileage may vary.

In answer to your second question...I haven't heard the clips yet, but I will listen immediately...

Listened to the cuts...great stuff! The first one sounds kinda like a cross between Prince funk and techno...the second a cool groove pop thing. Vocals are great, like the harmonies.

The sorta stuff I buy...well...I've only bought a few CDs off the internet. But then, I don't buy many CDs of any sort anyway. Kind of a Joni Mitchell sounding thing if you're curious...go to

http://www.nanettemalher.com

and check out the tune on the "Get an mp3" page. I found it by accident.

is she the one who records orgasms?

oddly, i dont buy anything online. i still get most all my music from the store. the only time i really buy online is at christmastime when i dont want to fight the crowds. even places that have online ordering i still call and talk to a real person when i order something.

In the good old bad old days of Napster, I bought tons of stuff online. I'd check out the charts at the BBC site, browse some lists on Amazon, and the music genre maps at Allmusic.com. Then I'd give a few tracks a test spin on Napster. Hey, it's not like any Bay Area radio station would have the balls to play these tracks.

Here's what I bought:

Two Lone Swordsmen, Modest Mouse, Alpha, Built to Spill, Delgados, Tortoise, Lemon Jelly, Photek, Blue States, Coldplay (as an import, back in August of last year), Elbow (another import), Sigur Ros (another import).

Think Napster put the nails in the coffin of the indie artist? Think again.

I subscribe to http://www.EMusic.com . It costs $9.95 a month, and you can download as much music as you like. Lot's of more obscure stuff, but lots of stuff you know too, like Maria Muldaur, John Hyatt, Flogging Molly, the Belmont Playboys and lots more. I get a lot of jazz from there too. It is all downloads in mp3 format, and they pay the artist directly. It give me a chance to try out lots of new stuff, but I don't have to worry about spending too much!
