Don't get me wrong, the SM 58 rejects feedback and delivers a strong signal. And it is fine for bland sounding voices such as mine.
The problem is that my lead singer has an interesting voice with a little Texas twang thrown in. The eq hump of the 58 colors his voice into making it sound generic, losing its distinctive sound.
I have heard about the SV 767 and Audix OM5. Any comments or recommendations?

Earthworks makes a good stage mic. I can't recall the model number off hand. Very transparent. Buddy

Audio-Technica AT4054. It's a large diaphraghm (same as the AT4050) in a handheld body. Killer.

I've had good luck with live vocals with my EV 457. It's got loads of highs like a condenser. If you've got the budjet, check that new Neuman hand held. Everyone is raving about them.

I recently picked up a Sennheiser e835 for live vocals (the e865 was unavailable at the time). The mic performs extremely well everytime I use it. It tends to bring out the best characteristics in everyone who sings through it.
I dig it.

I am a really big fan of Audix mic's. Try an Audix OM-3xb, OM-5 or a OM-6. I would go for the 3xb or the 6, check out http://www.audixusa.com for details on each mic. All of these mic are Hypercaridiod and reject feedback quite well. I, personally, will grab these mics long before I will a SM58. Thanks.

Nika told me that all the good ones are condensers and all the condensers are phantom powered. What's left in the dynamic world?

I second the Audix motion.I've used my OM-5 in situations where the mic was practically in front of the main speakers and feedback was never a problem, plus the response is flatter than most Shures, and yes,the OM series are all dynamic non Phantom mics.

humm - is Shure Beta 58(A?) much better than SM58? Where are the main differences? They are both dynamic, aren't they? thanks Matej

A beta 58 has more high end and a tighter pattern. It will kill you with a sibilant singer though.

Some of those new "Evolution" mics by Sennheiser are pretty good. I liked the e855 when I tried it for live vocals (in a practice space). Less boomy and midrangy than a 58, and a lot more clear.
The AKG C535 is a great live vocals condenser mic. I would recommend it over the Neumann, if only because it's several hundred dollars less but still quite good. It can bring out the sibilance in certain singers, however.
