Is it just me? Lately at around midnight PST, this site grinds to a halt. Pages load at glacial speeds if they can be accessed at all, and I’m using a cable modem! Wazzup?

Error: "A connection failure has occured."

Hmmm...

When that happens, do me a favor, and see if you can run what's called a traceroute. If you're on a PC, go to MS Dos prompt. type "tracert http://www.musicplayer.com >tracemp.txt" (without the quotes). This will create a text file (called tracemp.txt) in the default directory that you got into DOS with which is most likely C:/Windows. Email me ( rkudyba@uemedia.com) the text file after it's completed. It may take a minute or 2 to create. You can also look at the results of the trace program and if the trace does not leave your ISP's backbone, then it's definitely an issue with your ISP and a call and/or email to tech support is in order.

Thanks for the troubleshooting tip, kudyba, but I use a Mac. What should I do?

BTW, when this happens, I've tried to access the site with both Internet Explorer 5 and Netscape Communicator 4.6. No luck! I can access other sites fine though...

I was just having the same trouble. I have had this on occasion lately, regardless of the time. I remembered that Hotmail is always rotating through servers and you can hit a period of time where your bookmark won't work, but if you use File>Open you can get it.
I had a hunch to look at the bookmark properties, and what I found was a bookmark that was a particular server address, not just http://www.hotmail.com, so I changed the bookmark to that and it nevers fails to work, now.
Anyway, I had just tried to get here about 7 times and was having no luck, so I looked at the bookmark properties. Everything looked kosher, but for shits and giggles, I edited it and removed the ?action=intro that followed blahblahblah.cgi or whatever it was and bam! it worked.
Don't know if this means anything or what.
What is odd, is I opened another browser, so I could rebookmark the forum intro (entering through musicplayer.com) and the new bookmark doesn't have the command tag.

Yeah, it just happened to me again, right after midnight, so I called my ISP. They tried logging on from Ontario, Canada (I'm in L.A.) and they couldn't access the site either.

soapbox:

go here:

http://www.sustworks.com/

and get a copy of IPNetMonitor for the Mac...you will be able to do traceroute (among other things). It is a must-have utility for any Mac connected to the internet driven by a more-than-casual user.

OK we have our ISP on the prowl. I'm seeing if they an run a sniffer or some other monitoring. Keep those traces coming and report the times the slowdowns happen.

We do have the internal site search engine rewalk happening around that time and another process but we'll see if we can get to the bottom of it...heck even moving it later a couple hours--if that's the problem...

Man. I hear ya. being a second shifter at my *day job* i quite frequently visit this site at night and early morning hours, I ALWAYS run into problems with forums loading WAY too slow. One thing I have noticed is that is mainly reading posts, I can get to Craigs forum (for example) without too much trouble, but opening a post in his forum is VERY slow.

Hope that info helps.

5:29 AM

It took me 15 minutes+ to get here. That was the time it took to get the forum page, this forum, and this thread to load. This was after numerous reloads.
The fastest I saw was around 542 bytes/sec. 200 was more the norm. If any response at all.

Every single other thing I tried on the net was speeding right along.

Just to echo the other comments, I use a Mac and IE 5 and I've noticed the same midnight slowdown. A couple of times, it's even frozen my computer, prompting a "force quit" of IE 5.

"Most peculiar, mama!"

Well by the end of this week, we're moving our IP's to a different network that is a couple of hops closer to the Internet's backbone...I'm hoping that'll clear this up. In the mean time, keep sending me those trace routes...

Kudyba:

I am in California and this happens to me all the time too... usually around midnight to about 12:30 am. I teep meaning to run the trace on it... I promise I'll do so the next time it happens.

I've wondered if it could be ISP related... I notice everyone has listed their browser but soapbox seems to have at least partially ruled ISP problems out...

Just for the record, I usually use MSN as my ISP (I also have AOL... I'll try that next time the problem occurs and see if it makes any difference). Browser doesn't seem to make any difference. IE 5 and Netscape 4.7 give me the same results...

Well we moved the site to a better and more reliable backbone. Let me know how things are now around 3:00 AM EDT...

Hey Kudbya,

When did you guys move it? I experienced this problem just 2 days ago. Midnight strikes and all attempt to get in this forum is futile.

Cheers.

We switched it over last week around Thursday. Please send over those trace routes so we can eliminate it being your ISP...(see instructions above)...

The behavior of the system at this hour reminds me of the behavior of my own systems when backups are running. When do backups run on your servers?

We do have a backup of our Sybase RDBMS happening at that time but this forum software has nothing to do with Sybase. If anything that'd affect the rest of the site with the articles, i.e., not the forums. Our Sys Admin is looking at other "jobs" that may be running at that time and we still have one change left in that he is replacing the (older) router we go through presently. I'll keep y'all posted...
