Can anyone suggest alternatives to mp3.com? I've heard people mention other sites in passing, but I don't recall them. Please include your experiences with the sites along with any buzz you've heard. THANKS!!!

I'll preface this by saying I have nothing good to say about MP3c, I saw they were a CON over 2 years ago and they have only proved me right time and time again. I don't necessarily hate them for being a corporation, this is expected but the way they've lured naive musicians by purposefully misrepresenting the truth is really lame.

I read thru the sites listed above and knew I knew of another good one but dang if I could remember it.
http://www.mp3.com.au/
It seems pretty active. I get a lot of listens there.

But what are the statistics for these other sites? Any idea which alternate(s) gets more results? I know that mp3.com gets a lot of hits and people are making some money and selling music. boB

The cyber-world changes rapidly, so I'm bouncing this back to the top. I would like to get off of MP3.com and into something new. What's the best place to host MP3's at this time?

ArtistLaunch.com -
- Instant availability of your uploads, no approval process.
- Owned by some really great people who have been nothing but cool for over 2 years.
- In the midst of a lot of upgrades like On-Demand CD Manufacturing from Wav files of your tunes and or compilation CDs you can make up of different ArtistLaunch artists.
- A fantastic artist community.
- No banner ads
- No questions asked of listeners before download, listeners don't have to deal with any forms or other crap before downloading/streaming your music.
- Weekly radio shows that have a good following.
- Costs only $14 a year to cover bandwidth costs for the site.
--------------------------------------------------
JavaMusic.com
- Good site with tons of promotional tools.
- Right now they are offering different membership plans but also still have absolutely free hosting of your music if that's all you want.
- CD manufacturing is very cost effective.
- Only downside (and the reason I'm not there) is they collect info from listeners before allowing downloading/streaming.
--------------------------------------------------
These are the only two sites I'd recommend.

Just thought I'd resurrect this thread, as I'm thinking of doing an overhaul of my music site and possibly use a mp3/streaming hosting service for my mp3s. I need more server space than what I have now and I don't want to worry about bandwidth. I'm willing to pay for the service, just not as much as what I'm paying monthly for web hosting.
ArtistLaunch looks pretty good -- Steve, are you still digging it there?
What other mp3 hosting services is everyone happy with at the moment?

hello again! On the homerecording board, everyone (nearly), is on nowhereradio.com. The guy who runs it is on the board, and is very cool and helpful, and I've been thinking about putting my junk there. I think it's free.

Like Steve I have been at ArtistLaunch for some time, and it is a great site. The CD program is now up and running, I think. Looks promising.
Lotsa great folks there. Staff posts regularly on their forums, good support in general.

Looks like an interesting site... But I can't figure out how (or if) they allow musicians to upload mp3s. It doesn't appear that any musician off the net can upload stuff there like mp3.com... Am I missing something?

Thanks, Macle -- looks very cool... I like the user interface on nowhereradio.com better than artistlaunch.com (the colored circles on artistlaunch.com don't really tell the average user what the buttons are supposed to do). Does anyone here use nowhereradio.com and have an opinion, good or bad?

Whatever you decide...make sure you at least check out ArtistLaunch...I mean there's a lot of listeners, people who listen to real music...music enthusiasts...not just Acid Loop programmers and other musicians but regular people.
I'm constantly amazed at the amount of people that listen to my music there and I haven't even begun to promote my music.
The CD program is up and running...I like the fact that you can upload uncompressed wav files for your CD.
The site is still kind of ugly but they have a great web designer (an online friend of mine) who is putting together some very pro looking templates...the new look is supposed to be up in the next few weeks.
http://www.artistlaunch.com/
I'll also repeat...the owners of this website are not out for quick profit off the backs of artists...they are artists and have proven to me in the past 2 years that they truly have integrity...something that is very rare when it comes to these kind of ventures.
Peace.

This is something I complained about a while back...the new design is much more straight forward...hopefully they'll have it up sooner than expected.

ampcast used to be the best paying site of its kind for some time. (0.6 us cents per download compared to former 25$ annual fee)
but i am definately leaving. why? because they have raised their fee dramatically, lowered the payback a little and the traffic we get on the site is rather poor. the site is being visited fairy well for an unknown band like us - but hardly anyone is willing to go through the annoing signup process before they can download any music and leave. and that can not be the purpose of an mp3 portal if you ask me.
apart from that (from a consumer's point of view) it took me hours scanning the ampcast charts to find any music which had some sort of quality. looks like there's mostly crap up on ampcast. sad but - only my subjective observation
so i am glad about this thread which will hopefully help me find a good looking, comfortable to use site that DOES NOT DEMAND SIGNUP from their users. this is the most important thing to me.
payback is not that crucial unless you can really expect thousands of hits a day.
regards stefan
