It seems the more I try out other audio programs, the more SF Vegas seems to be easier than the others. Anyone out there who has tried it out extensively? how does it compare with cubase VST, Samplitude and other multitrack progs. Since I started using computers in the DOS days of Voyetra SPgold, I have tended to separate MIDI and Audio in different computers like when I used my prehistoric 386 for SPGold with Sound Forge XP and DOP(God help me!)in my PI 233. Now with my audio multitrack in a PIII, I use cubase VST in the PI which sometimes locks up. I haven't really used the VST for purely audio work so am I missing something there?

Vegas is the most intiutive audio app for the PC. It's very easy to learn and works like a charm right out of the box.

BUT, it's registration process makes me want to hurt someone ;-0. Really, it's quite annoying as you have to register and go online each time you install the software. If your PC isn't hooked up for the web then you can call an 800 number. But, this also means your screwed if you have to re-install when the company is closed (i.e., a weekend recording session). I'd much rather deal with a dongle (or none at all) than have to work this way.

If you can get past this then it's really worth looking at if you don't need MIDI sequencing. Although, if they put in MIDI sequencing I'd probably pee my pants with excitement. It's the closest thing that I've seen to ProTools without having to be locked into proprietary hardware. Check out the demo, it's fully functional for 7 days.

As far as the basic editing audio features go, yes, Vegas stacks up with ProTools and in some ways surpasses it. The main difference between ProTools TDM and a host system like Vegas is that the ProTools hardware handles all of the audio playback and audio effects leaving the CPU free, where the host system relies on the computers hardware and processing power. However, this doesn't come cheap. One can easily spend $25,000 on a ProTools rig when you add up TDM cards, plug-ins, I/O hardware, etc.

Since CPU's are getting faster (1 GHz) and cheaper host systems will become more like the hardware driven systems. Even if you buy a kick-ass audio interface, Vegas and a butt-load of plug-ins you still probably won't spend more than $2000. You can't buy a used ProTools 24 rig for anywhere near that price (not including host-systems like the Digi001).

...and Video Vegas is absolutely great if you need to integrated video with audio. It handles video as elegantly, and easily, as it does audio.

Vegas is great and very inexpensive. Im using it as i write this now fully loaded with every plugin that i can get my hands on its a dream. The only problem i have is that you can only use a limited amount of plugins on the track inserts.

Is there currently any way to integrate a control surface with Vegas? I've been waiting on the Mackie HDR24/96, but I'm thinking about just building another computer and putting Vegas on it...
