i need tips on how to sing and play at the same time... i'm real good bass player, and a decent vocalist and i just can't seem to put 'em together.... any tips appreciated

It takes a lot of practice. Some people have the natural ability to do it and others need work. I am a lead vocalist/guitarist/bassist and it took many years of practice to become comfortable with it. Hang in there it will come though but it does take time. After a while your head will forget what your hands are doing and everything will fall into place.

One suggestion: prioritize the vocals, even if it means greatly simplifying the part you're playing...which probably isn't bad advice anyway!

Learn the vocal as part of your bass part - when you x note, you sing x part, or in betweens notes x and y, you sing this part - practice.

Practice very slowly with lots of attention to the length of your notes. It's a feel thing that you normally don't think about, but it all goes to hell when you start singing.

yeah, go REAL slowly and speed up gradually as you get it. Which I guess is the standard way to practice anything...even sex!
