Just out of curiosity, what do all of you use as names for your mix when it’s finished? I’d love to hear some names that aren’t the same old boring "Final Mix" or "Master".

I often print the "It's 3am and I'm saving the company" mix. I guess you could substitute the words "record label" for "company".

I just use a number code until I decide which version of the mix will go to master.

If I've been fortunate enough to have some time ont he project. I'll print 3 potential final mixes... I won't label them at all, and then a few days later sit down with the guys and listen to them and then choose.

But when I do have to label one, I put an asterisk after it.

If it's going to a mastering engineer who I don't know I call in "Final".... I know, how boring.

Sometimes, the song already has a title, so at final mix it's "heavy bass" or "louder drums", just so we know what we did differently. the absolute final mix is normally called "This is the one!!!" so whoever is dubbing the final master DAT gets it right (nightmare scenario, that one!). Works in progress are usually called the first thing that pops in my head (i.e Pass the Gass, Tiny Panties, Blame in on the Bordeux, etc.). It's funy how the title somehow affects the way I approach the peice! So in the end, most of these end up as the final titles.

Interesting question. For CDs, I just write on a title & date because I generate so many of them that almost invariably, the most recent is the best, and is used for the final. With DAT, each tape gets a number. A logbook describes the contents for each numbered tape.

Wow!!

You guys are SOOO organized.

I usually just put an asterisk after the best one, or it's the last one on the reel/DAT.

The rest are usually "Vocal Up", Vocal Down", "TV Mix" ,"Instrumental", and A Capella".
