I've never really understood the Polar Pattern options on this mic. Anyone have examples of which pattern to use for different needs ?
cardioid, hypercardioid, omni, figure-8 ??
Thanks

I think you should get a book on Microphones, and learn about, not only polar patterns, but micing techniques, types of mics, etc.
I know there is a BIT in Modern Recording Techniques, by Huber and Ruinstien, and I used to teach out of one book JUST on microphones, but I don't remember it's name.
Anybody know of a good book on the subject?
It's just that, to do a good job of explaining the patterns, proximity, the low cut filter, the pad, and various recording and micing techniques for those patterns would take WAY more room that is available here.
Plus, someone already got paid to write a book on that.

best to have a stereo pair:
1) one on cardiod, one on fig 8 for an MS pair 2) both on cardiod for XY pair 3) both on fig 8 for a blumlein pair 4) both on cardiod for drum overheads (although I like 1&2 for drum O/H) 5) cardiod for typical vocal 6) omni can also be interesting for vocal 7) omni for room mic if your room is decent 8) fig 8 between toms 9) get a book like Bob said. Professional Microphone Techniques by David Miles Huber - check Amazon.com.
