One of the recording mags had such a comparison only a few months ago. Sorry, I forget which one. But...
I don't think you should risk a $300-800 purchase on some writer's opinion. And too many reviews are not critical enough to be all that useful anyway. Few magazines are as comprehensive as, say, PC Magazine, where they pick an Editor's Choice and tell you why. And I rarely see any audio magazine review mention copy protection, which to me is a very important issue.
All of the popular multi-track programs are available for download in demo form, so the best way to really know which ones are "good" is to try them all and decide for yourself. If a demo crashes, rule it out and go on to the next one.

rob, You have to try as many as you can, there are very different reasons that are personal in terms of use and learning curve specifics that you have to find out. Sonic foundry and Samplitude have very, very different looks and feel but anyone of those programs can produce top notch music, its up to you so demo as many of those those progs as u can and remember however much everybody else says, It all depends on your computer background and how well you can adjust to the programs, Some cool prog to try out, Sonic Vegas, Cubase VST , Samplitude , Saw happy surfing

A side-by-side comparison could also mean one of those "buyer's guide"-type pieces that gives system requirements, max number of tracks, file formats, MIDI capabilities, etc. Those can be useful for putting people in the ballpark.
But the main thing is to define your needs. Do you also need MIDI capabilities? Does a particular piece of software have certain features that are essential to you? Does your budget allow buying a whole bunch of plug-ins, or are you better off with a program that includes them?
And what about the interface -- is it comfortable for you? It's true that eval programs are a great way to go, but I wouldn't suggest ignoring the opinions of reviewers. The better ones, like a Jim Aikin kind of guy, go through a ton of software and often have a wider frame of reference that someone just getting started.
Remember, all software is great when it's working, and all software sucks when it crashes . And all software does both!
