A couple times, I've caught myself making a big distinction between Gabriel's Genesis and Genesis after Phil stepped in to take his place. And there was a big diffrence -- but it wasn't necessarily all qualitative.
The early PC Genesis mades some heartbreakingly lovely music, if I recall correctly.
I'll admit I can't remember their lyrics all that well... I think by then I'd realized it was often better to ignore the words in a lot of pop music if everything else was okay... as a consequence, I've occasionally been caught up short by just how good the words were in a few songs I'd long liked in a vague and general way.
(Of course, usually it goes the other way. I loved "Night Fever" in a pop confection kind of way... it seemed to somehow communicate an air of adventure and abandon... and then I ended up with a Bee Gees songbook in my lap with the notion of maybe covering the song. With the lyrics there in black and white and -- separated from the BG's trademark gelded chipmunk falstto vox -- now comprehensible, I was taken aback. The lyrics were... STOOPID with a capital "OO"... anyhow, I, as always, digress.)
At any rate, after a couple warmed over Motown leftovers and, as I recall, a stint hosting various lame TV shows, I pretty much wrote him off.

i woke up this morning and phil collins was rummaging around in my head. i rounded up some tough guys and we beat him good. goodfellas good.
satchmo was a madman, he just kept kicking and kicking phil in the ribs. django finally had to pull him off. lennon just stood there dumbfounded by all the violence.
that pussy won't be messing with me anymore.

I guess I'll never understand what so many of you have against Phil Collins. I maintain that Phil has released music I've hated and music I've loved.. pretty much like 80% of everything I hear.
The guy's a high energy performer, a fine actor (I don't know what you saw him in, but his guest spots on shows like Miami Vice were hilarious and there was at least one dramatic movie he starred in that was universally praised. Not a bad hobby for a professional musician.
I haven't bought a lot of his albums, either. I just don't get where you place him in the same, musical, league as, say, Brittany Spears and Ashlee Simpson. 
Whatever.. if it makes you feel good to bash a guy for getting rich and famous playing a lot of good music with excellent musicians then I'm certainly not going to change your mind.

Neil, I started this thread shorty after 9/11 because all the posts on SSS were about 9/11 issues. It was time to get back to music issues (see Khan's post on page 1).
One good thing Phil has done recently was sitting in with Genesis tribute band "The Musical Box". On that night he had a suck reprieve.
