I am trying to record audio from a Yamaha S80 keyboard on my laptop computer, but there was an unworkable amount of noise in the recording. This problem persisted in several different pieces of software.

I am getting the audio into the computer by just taking a 1/4" audio out from the keyboard and plugging it into the computer's keyboard input using a 1/4"->1/8" converter cable.

The amount of noise is really bad, and starts immediately when I plug the keyboard into the computer.

The keyboard itself has virtually no noise when listened to through headphones. Plugging the cable into the headphone jack doesn't work though. Both the headphone, left and right speaker output jacks are noisy, so I don't think it is the particular jack.

Any ideas on why this is happening, or how to fix it?

First off, there's a difference between 'noise' and 'hum'. If it's a hum, that's a ground loop between the board and the converter card. If it's a 'noise', then:

Level mismatch between the board's output and the soundcard's input. See if you can get some info on the soundcard and what the matchup is supposed to be. Also try turning the board's level down and see if it clears up any. If that helps, a simple passive attenuator could just work. Or:

May just be a noisy soundcard. Try an inexpensive(2 channels in and 2 out) AD/DA audio interface, with either an IEEE(PC) or Firewire(Mac) bus to your computer. A USB2 bus connection is also fine in lieu of Firewire or IEEE. M-Audio makes some good, inexpensive units that'll give you some measure of level matching and better quality AD conversion. I'll also give you the option of recording as 'midi' instead of 'audio' if you choose to go that route. HEY, your music's worth it!

Best, Paul
