I'm a newbie to recording (digital or otherwise). I want to record on my laptop so I was told that recording interfaces were the way to go. I have done some research and have discovered that most if not all of the entry level recording interfaces (M-Audio, Tascam etc), do not support Windows XP Media Center Edition which is the OS in my laptop. WMCE is Microsoft's relatively new operating system that ships with most new computers, especially laptops. WMCE appears to be identical to Windows XP Home Edition in the way it handles files but there are some inherent differences that make it non-compatible with many kinds of recording devices. The OS is great for organizing music, digital photos, DVDs etc., but at this time is not supported by many kinds of recording hardware. Does anyone know of any other hardware that is compatible with Windows Media Center Edition? Has anyone used other recording hardware (analog or digital mixers, for example) successfully with WMCE? I would prefer firewire connectivity, but regular USB would also be a consideration. Thanks in advance for any help on this topic.

I have Windows XP , though I admit a Mac is probably better for recording, my PC does me fine... I use an Edirol UA-25 interface ; just a little USB box with 2 XLR come 1/4 inch jack inputs. Have had the set up for around a year and it's excellent! Software makes a big difference though... I use a older version of Steinberg Nuendo which I picked up off eBay. This is Steinberg's top of the rance sequencing and editing software, and it shows... I've tried Cakewalk Sonar LE, but having used Cubase etc, I won't be switching back! If like me, you would prefer to stay with Windows because you already have a PC, i recommend a USB or Firewire interface because then the soundcard doesn't use your PC's memory so much, making it much less stressful when it comes to recording!
Enjoy, and feel free to ask further questions!

I just got a new laptop and didnt realize that my audio gear didnt work with windows media center until I tried installing them!!!
My laptop has WMCE and NO m-audio devices work! I'm sort of mad at m-audio right now.
My Edirol UA-25 Works fine with WMCE... Great recording device.
I think the best fix for me and you is to buy a copy of Windows XP Pro and install it on the laptop as a dual boot system. My only reserve on this is that Windows Vista is coming out but they should give me a free upgrade if I buy xp right now.
The ua-25 has midi in it as well... I havent tested it yet due to the fact I dont have a pair of midi cables, when I do I'll let you know. If so my problems should be fixed but I'd much rather the usb drivers for the keyboard to work.
Cakewalk Sonar has been said not to work with wmce so I really think I'm going to do the dual boot system, its the cheapest fix to the situation.
Sweetwater has a "unofficial" compatability list here on WMCE. http://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/ts/detail.php?Index=30163&keyword=30163
As you can see almost everything made by everybody doesnt work on WMCE... so again Dual boot is the way to go.
