Most Win XP PC'ers are probably aware of system tweaks to maximize audio performance (especially important for laptops I think). Things like removing unnecessary junk from loading in the Taskbar, Disabling Hibernation mode, shutting down screen savers and networks etc. But has anyone taken a look at all the stuff running in Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Component Services - Services (Local)?
It looks like there are a lot of things that could be stopped in there while using the computer for audio apps but the obvious questions are: would it improve audio performance and would one be able to restore the settings to what they had been?

First off, are you using this box strictly for music? If so, from the desktop click on the 'start' button and open 'all programs'. Make a list of what you don't need, then go to the 'Control Panel' and choose 'Add/Remove'.. and have a field day. All that stuff is just wasting drive space. When done removing crap, do a 'disk defragment' to reorganize what remains on the hard drive. If you run into trouble, open 'start' > 'help' and type in 'restore'. That will bring up a link to the 'system restore' routine, which will allow you to reset your system to an earlier date. Just make a note of the date that you started making changes, then choose an earlier restore date. Yep, XP even stores this info!

If you are using the box for other apps, leave it alone and see how your music app works. If you've closed everything else (programs/apps), there shouldn't be a whole lot of problems in XP except for harddisk storage space. BTW, you can take out/disable anything from the toolbar that you want without deleting the associated files. As mentioned above, check out some other sites first to see what's appropriate.

Best, Paul
