I'm now a vocalist of sorts for a rock band that likes to play loud. When we are fortunate to play clubs with hired sound this is not a problem unless the sound crew is not particularly good. I can only think of one time out of 5 that this has been the specific issue so I think it is something that we are doing wrong when we bring our own PA.
Basically the complaint we hear is that people can not hear the vocals when the music calls for me to sing softer. The Vocal sounds great in the monitors but I have been using an in ear monitor of late. I think with this much vocal in my ear I am not hearing the mix well enough to know when to push out over the music. Of course this in ear monitor has been great for forcing me to ease up, take it easy and not blow out my voice over a 4 hour night.
With some music it is all about dynamic and I don’t necessarily want to lose that dynamic. Anyway I had a few ideas and wondered what someone, anyone, with more experience then myself or my mates would think.

1. Turn up the vocals and move the mic away from my mouth when it is time to belt it out. The music is Rock but there isn’t any growling or screaming, however I do like use my ‘booming’ voice.
2. Maybe get a compressor or gate of some sort that picks my voice up to a certain level when it is soft and brings it down when it is too loud. I think gear like this could be tricky though.

Thanks for your time and consideration. I’m sure this is an old question. Just new to me. I’ll be researching the history as well to see if there is anything on the boards that helps.

Regards,

Scott

Thanks Paully. I used my new compressor tonight and we brought the house down.
