OK, I swear this is not a goof post.
I'm a 53 year old pro musician with decent hearing, but moderate Tinnitus. My band (moderate volume wedding band) is in the process of switching from floor monitors to In-Ear monitors, and headphones. I'm using a set of Yamaha RH5MA cans which sound great. My problem is that when I play 2 keyboards at once (Yamaha P90 and Korg TR61), the TR sounds way out of pitch thru the headphones. If I take them off and listen thru my amp, (Roland KC100), they are perfectly in tune. I'm sure this is some kind of weird Psycho-Acoustic effect, but it's really hard playing when you hear yourself soooooo out of tune. I've tried one ear on and one off of the cans, I've tried both on. No difference. Tonight I'll try a set of AKG studio phones to see if that makes a difference.
Has anyone out there ever experienced this?? Is it time to go see Dr. Hear-Good?? Maybe ditch the cans and go back to monitors?? I've noticed pitch problems when my ears are real tired in the past, but this is happening every night since going with the headphones. Listening levels are not real loud, and it's not a real loud band. Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JP

JP,
Have you actually run each keyboard thru a decent tuner? You always hear a lot more critically on the in-ears than thru an amp. Small phase diffs on the same (but not-in-tune) notes can cause a real headache. IMHO, the problem is probably ahead of the monitors. Are the keys still out of tune with each other if no live amps are used? Both floors and ears at the same time can lead to intonation problems also. How do the keys sound individually compared to other instruments in the ears, assuming they sound alright thru the floors. That's a key clue.
Paul

I haven't run them thru a tuner, but used just a speaker to monitor them last night and they were fine. When I have had the problem it's been VERY out of tune, more than a 1/2 step. But listening thru speakers only, immediately NO problem. There are types of hearing problems that will give you a different pitch in each ear. Scary. I've also asked the members of my band and they say there isn't a pitch problem in what they hear.

Nah, regular music just thru the cans is fine. I think it has to do with getting the sound thru 2 sources, or else I'm somehow getting some kind of ear fatigue from the cans. I will update!!!!! Thanx!!! JP

Overdue Update: I tried cheap In-Ears (the better Nady's) and then decided to use the Monitor feature of my KC100 keyboard amp (on a speaker stand at ear level already). This works the best for me and doesn't bother anyone else.

In-ear monitors are absolutely fantasic. I love their clarity. Less equipment to drag, no more of that ambient "roar" with floor monitors.
I also experienced out-of-tune music on keys, but found out that I accidently hit the "transpose" button, or was playing from a chart that was written in a different key from everyone else.
