Westy,

I'm sure you know what you're trying to do, but that's not much help until you flesh out the question a bit! Are you talking about a computer music 'program'? What computer operating system. A stand-alone MP3 player? Are you recording the voice? Are you doing a DJ/radio gig? You really have to spell out what you're doing a little better.

sorry, i'm looking a computer program that can play mp3s. running of windows xp. Its basically for a hall where background music will be played (Mp3's) but i need to be able to make announcements via a microphone, but i need the music to automaticall mute when the microphone is turned on. It has to be automatic because of the location of the computer is not where the user on microphone is

Much better. Most any audio software for PC is capable of MP3 file playback. Depends on other features required and price. Cakewalk has always offered reasonably priced music programs that are pretty easy to learn:

This is the one I'd look at:

Have you considered a small, stand-alone MP3 player with line-level audio outs? Probably a lot easier to work with unless you really need a whole computer.

I can give you a quick answer to the muting automation question. The easiest way to do this is to run the (stereo?) digital MP3 music out of the computer through a D/A converter, and when it's been converted to analog, go directly into a stereo compressor/limiter, then on to the mix desk. The vocal mic connects as normal to the mixing board, not the computer, and a part of it's signal is used to tell the compressor to lower the music going through it. It's called "ducking", and you've probably heard it during radio/TV commercials where the music lowers (ducks) during vocals. It can be set to very nearly mute. Total muting can be accomplished by inserting a stereo "gate" after the compressor. I don't know if that's what you had in mind so I won't go into the exact wire-up now, but that's the standard setup. If you're on a tight budget, http://www.behringer.com makes compressors and gates that will do the job. Happy hunting!

Best, Paul
