I recently got a new Fender Stratocaster and a Crate GLX30 amp. Frequently when I turn on the amp with the Strat plugged in I get a high pitched whine. Sometimes not. It doesn't seem to matter where I hold or point the guitar. When I go to a different electrical circuit in my house the whine stops. When I plug in my Ibanez acoustic electric I don't get the whine anywhere. The music store suggested trying a two pronged plug instead of a three pronged grounded plug going from the amp into the electrical outlet. They thought it might be a problem with the ground in the house's wiring. I tried it and the whine disappeared, but next day it was back. Anybody know if a line conditioner of some type might work? Any other ideas?

Hi Dean,

It sounds specific to the amp, and I don't think it's a (house) power issue, or the typical Fender single-coil hum. Sounds more like either you've got a resonant frequency going on between the guitar and the amp's input stage, or a component issue in the amp. When it happens, does it go away if you switch between pickups on the Strat?

Copy your question and paste it over to the Crate site. See what they say.

Sounds to me like it's picking up an electrical signal - single coils, neon tube? fridge? dimming switch?
