Hey Nick,
Sorry, but unless the speakers have built-in power amps, you'll have to buy a seperate unit. The Folio doesn't have a power amp built in.

Give us some clues.
* Size of pub, or capacity. * Make and specs(power, ohms)of each speaker. * Does it have to be stereo. * Loud/soft music. * Number of mics. * What's your maximum budget. * Used amp OK, or new. * Is there a music store near you that carries these units. If so, what brands do they have?
The more you can tell us the better. There are a lot of choices, so narrow down the field. You might look at something like this if money is an issue.

You can get the GB price right on that page. That's about the cheapest price out there.
Best, Paul

No rush! Active and passive merely means whether the speaker has it's own power amp inside the encloser(active) or needs a seperate power amp between the mixer and the speaker(passive). Same for mixers; active(has amp power) and passive(no amp power). Phantom power is the DC voltage that some mics need to run. Depending on the mic, you won't need it. Leave it off. It's for driving mics, NOT speakers.
To get an idea of the used prices on amps, follow eBay listings under 'Buy' > 'Musical Instruments' > 'brand name + amp'. Here's what I'd look for if it was me. BTW, this is an excellent deal.

Right. The only problem with active speakers is one of breakdowns and weight. If an internal speaker amp blows out, you loose the whole unit; amp AND speaker. Same if a speaker blows, you loose the use of the internal amp. However if you use a seperate, external amp and it blows, that's real easy to replace, and you still have your passive speakers ready to go.
That's the trade-off for using active speakers; a little easier to transport and setup, but a problem if something breaks. Also, if you get the active type and it's not powerful enough, what do you do(?)!! With the external setup, just replace the power amp with a bigger one.
IMO, the price differential between active and passive setups does not really favor either setup. As long as you have some time, get out and check what the competition is using. Also, I'd figure on spending a little more than 200 pounds. It's worth it to buy quality stuff if you can.
If you're going for a seperate amp and speaker setup, I'd suggest Bose speakers and Crown power.
Paul
