I'm rebuilding a 70's (or late sixties) Conrad Bass. Essentially I am de-fretting it and fixing the tuner and tone knobs. My Question concerns the neck. There is a slight curve to the neck. If placed fretboard down on a flat surface there is a slight gap towards the middle (around frets 7/10). I know the nut on top of the neck keeps everything straight. My question is: Which way do I turn the nut the straighten the neck out? Also, since the neck is off the body for the moment, how will I know how far to straigten it? Once the whole is pieced back together won't the strings start pulling the neck too?

I'll throw my 2 cents in....

The neck is supposed to have a small amount of curve (called relief), but you can't set or measure it until the strings are on and tuned to pitch.

One the bass is reassambled and strung up, righty tighty for less relief, lefty loosey for more relief.
