You need to provide a little more info. What type of record medium are you using: computer (MAC or PC) or a stand-alone HardDisk digital recorder? How many tracks will you be recording at one time?
HDware recorders (Tascam, Mackie, Alesis, Fostex) connect just like their tape counterparts. The direct outs of the mixer's channels run to the recorder's channel inputs, usually through a normalled patchbay channel. The recorder's outputs then return to the line B input of the cooresponding mixer channel, again usually through a seperate normalled patchbay channel. That's a typical setup. The mixers 8(?) output busses, which also are usually connected to the patchbay, are not normally included into the recording chain unless needed (hence, the patch bay connections).
Computer-based recorders connect the same way, but with one big difference. They require a digital interface for each channel, which converts analog waveforms to digital (that the computer understands). Conversion is done on recording (AD) and at playback (DA). I don't know which Mackie board you have, but the newer ones have an optional FireWire option that does all this AD-DA conversion right in the mixer, then sends the digital data directly to the computer over a single wire. Very neat. Othewise, you'll have to invest in a multi-channel digital interface. They're typically available in 2 to 8 channel modules.. also called sound cards. A single wire then connects the module to the computer.
Good luck, Paul
