I have an old synth, a Yamaha DX27 to be precise. Is there anyway to control programs such as M-Audio's M-Tron etc, or Mellosoftron (a program I downloaded) with it? What do I hook it up with, and what is a MIDI connection?
Another question is, if I buy any old (recent) synth, can I use it with the computer to create sounds and get patches? I'm new to all this and I really want to know where to get started. I will probably be using my keyboard skills in a band sometime soon and will need to buy a new synth/keyboard. Can anyone recommend me any either with preset Mellotron patches (especially strings brass and voices) or any that are easy to upload patches onto?
Help would be appreciated, websites aren't much help here, I need a human voice!
Cheers,
Publius.

PS. What format is a 'To Host' lead and where does it plug in?

Look for a 5-pin small round connector marked MIDI OUT. If it's not there you're probably going to be stuck just using the thing for audio-only.

To feed midi into a PC, you'll need a midi interface. Most el-cheapo sound cards have one built into the joystick connector (called a 15-pin D-connector). You can buy or make a cable to connect your MIDI gear to this.
