Our band is using 4- 450 Mackies and 2 of the Mackie subs for a PA. We play kind of a blues/jazz/jump swing fusion kind of thing. It is more than we normally need most of the time. But, we have some outdoor gigs coming up this summer and some of them will be on stages.

The question is: Should we put the subs on the ground or on stage or won't it make any difference?

We've never used a system with subs outdoors before except with "in house".

You are going to have some trouble getting proper sound out of you "sub" in the open. A true sub-woofer works by presurizing your room. You will be more impressed with a different speaker, but here are two things to experiment with...

1) flip the subs on thier sides and let the speakers play to the crowd. Soften the 80Hz and below, while slightly pushing the 125Hz to 300Hz range. This will take some tuning, depending on power, speaker size and evironment.

2) Set them on each side of the stage on the ground, so they baffle under the stage. The stage will act like a deflector and give the bass some presence near the stage.

Hope this thread isn't dead. The forum doesn't seem to get much use...

The subs for outdoor gigs brings up a whole new world. While the two SRM450's and the pair of active subs would do modest club justice, the SRM450's will be quieter and the subs just tad bit better than nothing.

With outdoor gigs, you can't take advantage of a reflective floor for your subs; so that already tells you to double the subwoofer output. And as the previous poster mentioned, the lack of an enclosed room now diminishes any additive reflective energy as well.

Unless you have to live with what you brought, consider hiring out for more sound system when doing outdoor gigs.

If you plan on having your mixing equipment infront of the stage and set back, you could try a second set of subs near the board directing towards the crowd. I am new to this as well but I think that may help getting the low end to the majority of your crowd.

Gosh, I thought this thread was dead, too.
I appreciate the help. I never thought about placing them under the stage. That makes sense.

We actually do hire out a PA on the bigger outdoor gigs and the larger rooms we play in have in house systems. But, we play a lot of small parties and carnivals outdoors where we don't play loudly and don't need much. The Mackies work great in smaller clubs and we have now done a couple of outdoor gigs where they performed quite well. I didn't get the bass response I was hoping for, but perhaps this will help. Thanks again.
