Two feet is too close unless the monitors are magnetically shielded. You may be contributing to rapid magnetization of the heads and tape path, resulting in loss of high frequencies on your tapes. Also, I find it hard to avoid the tendency to use the top of the speaker to lay a reel on, or my edit razor blade. (remember those?)
