The SM57 is the "use it in emergencies" type of mic on kick drum. The latest "touring standard" kick drum mic is the Shure SM-52. Before the SM-52 achieved concensus, the AKG D-112 was the kick drum mic to have, but it does color the tone of kick somewhat. Other kick mics getting notoriety are the Audix D-4 and the Audio Technica AT-25.
I worked with the Sennheiser E602 on kick this weekend and that also was a nice mic, but may not get the popularity vote.

Two corrections:
Beta 52, not SM-52 as the standard
ATM25, not AT-25 as noted

I use a Beta 52 and it works just fine. The only thing that I find irritating is the way it attaches to the stand. The mic is designed with threads so you screw it onto the stand. Well, I don't want to leave it on the stand (it would be trashed by now if I did. )As a result from screwing it on and off several times, the threads are stripped on the mic and on the stand. For that very reason, I would argue it's road toughness. I wonder if you can buy just the bracket piece?? Other than that, it's been a great mic.

Professional favorites: Electro-Voice RE-20:great bottom Sennheiser MD-421:good bottom and attack Beyer M-88:deep, with good attack Remember, it is not just the mic-placement is a vital concern. Any of these mics in the wrong place might as well be a '57. Try starting halfway betweeen the center and edge of the head, canted slightly toward the beater. If there is no hole in the front head, try near the edge, about 1.5 inches away.

Been using the Beta52.....with great results.Just recently I tried the Sennheiser E602, and really liked it. I found it needed very little eq'ing...Both list for around the $300 mark, but you should be able to get discounted to around $200 or less depending on where you are and your relationship with your Dealer.

I Love the Beyer M88 for kick. Good low end and good attack. Warmer than the D112 I reckon.
