I was thinking of buying a direct box, such as tech 21 bass driver DI, for the larger gigs that we do. I am currently using a GK 800RB head over a 15, 10 and tweeter. I am very happy with my stage sound, but was wondering if this would improve the sound through the mains more than the direct out on my head.

I have not heard the Tech 21 DI box, as it is marketed towards bassists, not soundmen. As a soundman, the pro touring standard DI boxes for bass guitar are the Countryman Type 85 and the BSS AR-133. Both are active direct boxes that are very high impedance to not alter the instruments sound. Of course, if you want the "amp sound", then the pros choose a Shure Beta 52 or AKG D-112 mic on the amp's speaker cabs.

You may also want to check out a tube direct, such as Anthony de Maria labs. It has a nice warm sound. I agree with Mark in that you may also need mics on the cabinets in addition to a DI. Beyer M-88s and Sennheiser 421s are also good.
Another avenue is taking the signal right off the bass instead of using your amp's pre out.
This (combined DI and speaker mic)seems to be the method most favored by live engineers in my experience.

I have used two different active DI's with wonderful success.

-L.R. Baggs Paracoustic DI
-Behringer ULTRA DI Model 100

I have chosen my bass and strings so that "My Sound" is how I like it independant of the amp. If the house monitor system can't handle bass, I bring along a 2x10" cabinet and GK RB400 to drive the stage. I find that just about every engineer that I work with loves my attitude because they can have complete control of the bass for the house system.

If you are able to find a guitar/pickup/string combonation that completely satisfies your need for tone, I'd chose the Behringer DI because it is transparent and is cheap. (Around $60) If you need more tone control then the L.R. Baggs is great but costs a little more. ($125)

The best part is that I can carry my whole rig inside the bass case!!! (Look ma, one hand / trip!!!)

P.S. Tone junkies... don't forget to change your strings
