Hello Everyone... I, like so many of you all, have spent a good chunk of my life wraping cables!! I've seen many "techniques" to this artform but must share the same result...a tangled, twisted mess. Can anyone shed some light on the "correct" way to wrap the average microphone, patch cable, speaker cable, etc... Thanks! (p.s. the feeling of a nice beer drenched microphone cable running through my hands is like no other...HA!)

The correct technique for cord wrapping is called the "over and under" method. Small diameter cables, like mic cables and patch cords use about a 7" loop diameter. Most people know the "Under-under" technique intuitively. This is done by holding the rolled up cable in your left hand and using your right hand to twist counter-clockwise up the loops.
The over-under method is the same, except you altenately twist the cable clockwise (over) and then counter-clockwise (under). This results in no twists or kinking in the cable as it reels in. Also, try to let the cables straighten out before reeling them in or you are asking for tangles.
Bigger cables like speaker and power cables get a larger loop diameter (like 10"), so your right hand has to grab more cable length per loop.

First let me add a hearty amen to Mark's post... but let me ask a little more:
I learned this method the same way I learned to tie a neck tie, by having an experienced person physically control my hands until I got it. I need a better way of teaching this method to others...
HELP!!!!
(So far only one of my "students" gets it.)

Well....I do it a bit differently. It achieves the same result though. I wrap my cables by first straightening them out and then looping them into my left hand in about a 10 inch loop making sure that it lies in a perfect circle as i wrap it. This ensures that no part of the cable is twisted and sure lengthens the life of the insulation and shielding. I use a roll of coloured electrical tape to put a quick wrap around one end to the loop just to hold it together. The tape comes off easily and is cheap. Those velcro cable ties work too...i just always lose the damn things!

Just another short note on the electrical tape trick. I buy this stuff at the hardware store and you can get it in every color of the rainbow. What works GREAT for us is to put a wrap of this tape at each end of your cables in your designated color, this makes them VERY easy to identify. I no longer lose any cords and there is never and argument about whose cord is whose since we all got color coded. I have gone as far as putting a quick loop of green tape(my chosen color) on my wall warts, power bars and other small gear as well. This works VERY well if you do a lot of sitting in or subbing. Instantly recognizable gear and cords. And it makes a pro impression "WOW! this guy is REALLY organized!" I have had many compliments on this little quirk of mine.

I use the single loop method of rolling cables like Jimmy, but I keep a couple of packs of ponytail holders handy for cable ties. You know the ones - loops of elastic with a ball on each end. They stretch out eventually, throw 'em away and buy another $2 pack of 12 or so.
