I have an Ibanez EX series bass and was wondering if it's possible to install a pre-amp in it. Would there be any risks involved in doing that (i.e. would I risk damaging the electronics already in the bass), and any ideas of how much it would cost? Any comments would be greatly appreciated!
I guess you have to answer the question "why?" on adding a preamp to your bass guitar. When executed correctly, a passive electronics based-guitar will be similar to an active (battery) electronics version.
If you pay attention to details like short-as-possible guitar cables, proper impedance buffering of effects, and maintain correct signal levels; it will not get any better than this.

Your question has two answers: Yes and No. Depending on which preamp you wish to install, it may fit perfectly with no modifications OR you may have to have some routing done within the cavity for the preamp and battery to fit. This will also change the tonal characteristics of the bass by reducing the mass. If you are somewhat pleased with the passive sound of the bass I would recommend using an external preamp such as a Sadowsky or Aguilar. That way you will have the best of both the active and passive worlds. Hope this helps...... RD.
