Can anyone recommend a non-biased, consumer reports type of service that reviews pro audio equipment on a regular basis? This could be online or magazine format, but getting information of this type from retailers is difficult as they are interested in selling the brands they stock. I thank you in advance for your input.

You might try monitoring the rec.audio.pro newsgroup for opinions galore.

At the risk of blatant self-promo... If you are not subscribing to the paper-and-ink version of GIG, then you are missing quite a lot of this type of info. We run reviews of pro audio gear every issue and buyer's guides to specific gear catagories 8-10 times a year. I am obviously biased, but i really believe it is the best resource around. Just hit the "Subscribe" link to the left of this screen to check itout.

We do subscribe and find those reviews helpful, but need head-to-head comparisons especially when comtemplating an expensive purchase.

Everyone has an opinion, but people are a great resource. If you get enough opinions, you can start coming up with your own conclusions. Also, go out and listen to other systems. When you here a good one (or bad one) find out what they are using. Most bands or engineers love gear and love to talk about it.
In my opinion, it is pretty clear that there are the handful of manufactures that are on top in their respective product lines and you can't go wrong going with any of them. If your budget will allow it, then it is just a matter of sizing your system properly.

Karen,
At the risk of Bill's wrath, head-to-head gear "shootouts" tend to be the results of bias by the conductor(s) of the shootout; and may not agree with your list on purchase priorities. Alot of giggers are "value" (bang for buck) consumers and are likely not gear snobs; who would tend to read publications tailored to reviews of subtile characteristics of high-end gear.
Gear shootouts also may raise the ire of gigmag advertisers who may find their equipment at the low end of the shootout ratings game. I would rather see all advertisers, even lower quality ones, than a few that gigmag not pissed off yet (to pull their advertising). After all, the more advertisers, the more biz, sweat, and tech articles we get to read.
Read the roadtest reviews, and read between the lines as well. The reviewers tend to be frank of what the gear is good for, and that may indicate what the gear is inappropriate for. Think of the old Sears & Roebuck "Good, Better, Best" categories and know when you see the word "good", it may not be "better" or "best". Use the tables in the monthly buyer's guides to match features to your needs.
