I would like some advice on a good drum monitor. I have been using a Sonic 15" wedge, which isn't quite enough, or sometimes a JBL EON. I like the EON, but it would be nice to have a monitor that I don't have to raise up to head level.
The JBL TR225 looks like it would work, but I have never heard one. EV Elimators series also looks good. I have a QSC USA 900 for an amp. The power rating is 450@4, and 270@8. I would like to keep it under $500.

You can do MUCH better than the TR or Eliminators for that price. Here's the ticket. They're are several companies , (Nady, Shure, Carvin, ect..), that are now offering inexpensive, (@$200.00), in ear, wireless monitoring systems. One of these used in conjunction with a limiter is effective, portable, clean and will not feed back through all ogf those drum mics. If you really need some thump you can always and an external speaker devoted just to the low frequencies.
Also, if anyone else in the band is willing to get the same monitor mix as you, you can purchase additional receivers for less than $75 a pop.
Just my 2 cents!

Why not add a sub-woofer cabinet to your sonic wedge to beef up the low end. Crossover your sonic at 100 to 150Hz and feed everything below to the sub. Some under $500 subs would be the Yamaha S118IV, the Eliminator Sub, and various others from Carvin, Peavey, Yorkville, etc. Use the other channel of the QSC USA900 for the sub.

Richie Rich,

Follow-up on the in ear monitor. I have considered going with an in ear monitoring sytem. The biggest concern I have is that besides providing my PA for my band, I also rent and run it for other groups. I don't know how much acceptance in ear systems have achieved at this point. How would most drummers react when they ask about their monitor and you hand them a set of headphones? I don't know the answer but I would assume the response would vary. Also, I heard that they take some getting used to, with hardest being the feeling of isolation from the rest of the group.
It would be great to see the opinions of others. I know that the popularity of in ear systems is growing, but I don't know of any club bands in the Minneapolis area using them, or production companies supplying them first, over the traditional wedges.

Bart,
First of all, let's face it. You aren't going to get anywhere unless you rid yourself of that "spoiled keyboard player". Everybody knows that the drummer's desires should come before anyone else's.

As far as the in-ear monitor is concerned, I would not suggest using an in-ear system unless you are prepared to switch every monitor to in-ear. As long as there is a combination of mics and monitors onstage, there is a risk of feedback. And you definately do not want that feedback going directly into your ear- especially if you are not your own monitor engineer.

My advice would be to fire the keyboardist, take her JBL Eon, and lighten up! It's only Rock & Roll!

I'm not sure who makes this but I've heard of a drum stool monitor where the speaker is connected to your seat. How cool is that for the kick-drum-needy-in-the-mix-player?

Or, you may want to think about customizing one?

Well after considering all of your suggestions, I decided to go with the JBL TR225. I tried it out for the first time this past weekend and I am very happy. The output from this 4 ohm cabinet is very impressive. I was running at 8 ohms prior, and it would cause the amp to clip at times. Not the case with TR225. In fact, when we did our monitor check we had to turn down everything in the drum mix because it would knocked me off the chair. After a couple tweaks of the eq and setting appropriate levels, I was set to go.

One more comment; I have a differing opinion on JBL. I have played on stage and ran sound on JBL's higher end/concert systems on several occasions and they have not blown me away. Specifically, the low end tends to be floppy and muddy, and midrange is hollow, IMO specifically compared to EV or EAW. But, I do own a small EON system, with complimentary powered subs, and I just love them. They are outstanding for smaller venues, they are warm, yet punchy. In the year + that I have owned them, they deserve the "Prove it all Night" award in my book. They are versatile little work horses that also work great as monitors when we run our bigger EAW system. I am about to add the TR225 to my list of great value speakers from JBL. If someone has a different experience with JBL's higher end systems, I would like to hear it. I read the review in the current Gig which was informative, but I still think you would be surprised in a head to head competition with other "higher end" systems.
