Can somebody give me the layman's two paragraph course in setting up these two entities and the pros and cons of doing it yourself vs trying to find a record label or publisher?
My situation: I have songs that I've written and recorded in good demo form. I have copyrighted through the copyright office in compilation form. I believe (as do others I've played them for...) they have potential for the marketplace. I would like to shop them to a record label/producer for further production if warranted. OR a more likely scenario perhaps (if I'm not the guy behind the voice...), I'd like to see if a producer or label feels the material is warranted for another voice or band. This is where I lose the thread in who does what, how the money is paid and what can I do myself to better position myself in any negotiation? ie: be my own publisher, be my own label, etc.
I realize this is a HUGE topic, but give me some bones please and lets start a discussion. Everytime I read a music biz book I tend to get lost in the numbers and it never seems to "click". I feel like I have a million questions, but sometimes asking or phrasing the question is the hardest part and that only comes when something triggers the thought. Hopefully this post will generate some interest because I know I'm not the only one whose in the dark with this stuff...
PS - the style of music I'm plugging (if applicable to your answer)would be along the lines of modern adult contemporary music in the pop rock and ballad vein.
Thanks in advance

the issue at hand is: what does a label do for the artist?
well, the label provides the finances. and finances answers alot of questions. the main questions that come to my mind are how do i get my product mass-produced, how do i get it destributed, how do i get it played on air, and how do i market it. that's the stuff labels do. all that costs money. but if you target a local area, comprable to your funds, you can start your own indie label. starting a label is easy, getting it to actually accomplish something for the artist is the hard part. but it can be done.
