My question is in the music industry how does talent affect the success of an artist compared to someones looks?

The latest hit T.V. show American Idol has provoked me to pose this question. I have noticed that there are many talented artists out there but what about the Britney Spears, and the many boy bands out there. Obviously they are successful because of their looks. I can't quite understand how we can turn away so many talented musicians because of their image.
