Back at the end of July, I saw a posting on Compsers Job search forum seeking material for a film. The instructions were very specific and sounded totally legit, so I followed said submission instructions and sent in a demo.

I had to mail it to a P.O. Box and was told flat out that they weren't accepting ANY CALLS. Okay, I understand that. But about a week later my package was returned sighting that the Post Office had made several failed attempts to deliver the package!

So I sent an email advising the film people of this development and asked what I should do now. Their response was to just mail it again and they'd call if they were interested.

Given the results of the first attempt, I'm wondering why the post office couldn't just deliver it. Why didn't the film people pick it up the first time? This sounds odd to me. Should I even bother sending it again?

Sounds like somebody doesn't have their shit together, if you ask me. How bad do you want to get your stuff placed in their movie? Is there money in it for you if they use it?

I agree. I called the Poat Office and asked how a failed delivery was possible. They said when they someone sends an overnight package that a notice is sent to the recipient. Then they have five days to pick it up. They sent them two notices! Then they sent the package back to me.

It's supposed to be a big L.A. Feature. But I can't believe that the production company wouldn't have SOMEBODY making a daily run to the Post Office for this stuff, especially considering the fact that they solicited this material!

So, I'm not going to bother. I don't think I want people like "that" even pretending to know how to critque my work, since they've already fallen waaay short of mine.

heh heh. Anytime someone tells you that their project is already slated to be the next big thing, ask them for a dollar. In a year's time you will have collected so many dollars you'll never have to work again!

I really think the flacky response you got is probably pretty typical -even of people who have had some legit success. I think it's the nature of the business. People are somewhere between being 'Star-struck' thinking about attaining some kind of celebrity status, and just being self-focused creative types -the kind of people who can come up with BRILLIANT stuff, and don't know how to dial a phone, or balance a checkbook. Sometimes, you have to go the extra mile to get them to wake up and take notice of you. And to me "ABSOLUTELY NO PHONE CALLS" means, "don't call me unless you really need to -I don't want it ringing off the hook all day". I think in employment in general, and entertainment work in specific, there are two ways to land gigs: The 'using the proper channels' way, and The way that works. Sometimes the difference between getting the gig and not getting the gig, is whether or not the guy listening to your work is on task that day, or floundering with his head up his ass.

Flacky people aren't necessarily to be avoided. You just have to use a more aggressive approach to keep them from drifting off while you're talking to them.

And by all means, get as much money up front as you possibly can! These people will try to get you to be flexible for them. Flexible is good, but only when it works to your advantage. Otherwise even the flake with the best-intentions in the world will still screw you over. So get the money up front, or at least a non-refundable deposit, and NO YOUR LIMITS.

Enjoy!

Hey,

Try, try, and try again. Persistence is the best strategy. Many times what you percieve to be getting blown off is just a busy person with other stuff on their plate that week.

Don't worry about being a pest, they will let you know if you are.

Follow through is the golden rule.

I always say you gotta follow your dreams. But if the work doesn't appeal, then don't do it. Only you will know what to do.

True enough Sergio. Couldn't agree more.
