Willie,
The secret to making big money in the music business isn't getting a good agent to do the work for you.
Here's the honest truth... they have to represent thousands of people, so they can't possibly put forth the same effort as you would.
You are far better off learning how to do direct response marketing. Because you can invest far more into your project than an agent. You'll also get better results (and get to keep all the money!!!
)
There are several good books on selling and marketing, I'd recomend some by Dan Kennedy. I also publish a marketing course for musicians. If you are interested just shoot me an email.
My recomendation for you if you are dead set about getting an agent would be to simply look in the yellow pages. But here are several things you should look for...
1) Ask them for testimonials, letters, and comments from other satisfied customers. You should also ask for references so you can speak with satisfied customers. If they don't have an abundance of testimonal proof, that's a huge tip-off that they aren't very good.
2) You should also ask if they offer a guarantee. If they aren't sure enough about their service to offer an UNCONDITIONAL guarantee, then you are taking a big risk.
3)You want to find someone who has lots of experience in marketing musicians and CD's. There are a lot of pretend experts out there that have never actually made money marketing themselves, but sell agent servies to others.
If they can't provide an abundance of proof in all 3 of those areas... tell them to take a hike!
Best,
