I have a damn good band called the Apes of Wrath. We're based out of a town just north of Boston. We know a lot about rock and roll as a music but not much about the business. We are doing pretty well but we need to get help getting more shows. We'd really appreciate any incite we could get toward getting more gigs and help with a good promo package, especially from Boston area bands. Thanks- Bradley

Bradley--- the phenomenon is this: you need to travel OUT of the Boston area. You see, then you are a "band from Boston", whereas in Boston you are just "another local band". We have had good success just lately getting gigs out of town. You go into another town, two, four, six hours away, and they are tired of their same old local bands, especially if it is a small (under 75,000?) town. You are the new fresh thing. You sound more impressive to those people out of town. Then, when you are back home in Boston, and your faithul fans ask where you've been, then you tell them, you know, on the road, traveling, playing shows all over. Then they look at you differently. Beyond that, the same rules apply in music biz as in getting any other kind of job. Ask for references, thank people who help you along the way, when you DO get gigs, show up on time, be cool, keep their customers happy, be flexible, etc. That will build your rep. Also, take the worst place you play in, the kind of place you only play when you are not busy (places you just don't like) and agree that you're just not gonna play there. After a while, the word will be out that you guys have standards and you are aiming higher than the local VFW Chicken Fry. Good luck. Fingers
