I need input on what works well (gets gigs) in a demo tape/CD. I've been told that short, 30-second or less clips of several tunes is about as much as a bar/venue owner's attention span can handle.

So I'm considering about 2 minutes worth of short clips, followed by the full-length versions. Good idea or not?

We're mainly a classic rock band but we also play blues and a couple of jazzy and country tunes. I think showing our diversity in the demo tape would widen the opportunities. Any disadvantages to this approach?

Other tips welcomed. Thanks.

C'mon! I can't believe nobody here makes demos! What works and what doesn't?

I've been gigging the club scene for 15 years, and yes most club owners won't listen to more than several minutes of your demo tape. That's why it's important to make that impression in that amount of time.My bands latest demo was about 5 minutes in length,we spliced together 6 tunes taken from various live shows performed over the past year.We selected our hottest tunes, showcasing each of the 4 vocalists, to show our depth. To take this one step further, the presentation and packaging has much influence on whether the tape/cd even makes it to his/her desk.
