I want to have a web site designed for our band. Can anyone suggest a checklist of questions I should ask a potential web page designer to answer? I have contacted a few designers and most have replied "I haven't had the opportunity to do a web site for a band, but I'd love to give it a try". I want to make sure we get what we are paying for, but I don't know where to start. If we ask the right questions, maybe we will be able to weed through all of the undesirables. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check out the discussion board at CD Baby where there's plenty of designers that have posted "classifieds". Surf to http://cdbaby.com/talk/Forum28/HTML/000032.html

I recently constructed a webpage for my band. I have limited computer skills, and no budget for either a web designer OR a web hosting service. A lot of people told me that making a putting up a website was pretty easy, but getting someone to actually sit down and help me do it was another story all together. So I rolled up my sleeves and made it happen! I found that the program Netscape Composer was extremely easy to use in building my site. From the start of this project I had the basic site online in less than one week. If you do not already have it, download Netscape Communicator 4.7, the latest version, from http://www.netscape.com . Once you have the program installed on your computer, open up a new document in the Composer program and the you can just type and cut and paste as you would in Word or Powerpoint. This program does all the code for you. Once I got started I began to gather animations, fonts, and web page icons from all over the net. Just click, save and then paste in. I added in pix from a digital camera borrowed from work and scanned a bunch of older pix to add. It is important to save everything with a detailed decription and save it all to a dedicated file like "my Webpage" to ease confusion as you maintain the site in the future. Once you've got the hang of this and are ready for the world to have access to it, it's time to get your free web space. I choose http://www.xoom.com as my host. They offer unlimited web hosting space in exchange for placing a small advertising banner at the top of each of your pages. I prefer this subtle advertising to the annoying "pop-up" windows used by some of their competition. In any case there are several of these free hosting services available now. Go to the site of your choice and register for the service and they will provide you with all the info that you need to get your site online from there including the program and info that will let you upload the web pages you've constructed to your new web address. Trust me, if i can do this - anyone can! Check out our site. It's not the best but it does the job and it's free. here's the address: http:/xoom.com/everspinning/Real.html If you decide to give it a shot, good luck and hang in there. In the end you'll find that it will be frustrating but it'll be fun!

I work with CollectiveMotif.com. I believe that we have the best quality web design services at the lowest prices for bands. We're invilved in the music industry, and we know it's hard to come up with enough cash to pay some thick-walleted yuppie to design and host your site. Check us out: http://www.collectivemotif.com/webhosting/

Whatever you do to get your site on-line, and whatever the content and visual impact don't forget that you will need to attract people to it and this means off-line marketing. Tell people that you exist 'cos believe me there are so many sites out there, that expecting people to find you by either search or coincidence is optimistic in the extreme. Once friends and family have visited then everything's going to go very quiet! Oh, and keep your site live (change content regularly) and keep it up-to-date if you want to attract a loyal following of regular visitors. If you have the time and capability it might be worth setting up a chatroom; and don't forget about setting up hotlinks to other related sites, in this way you can create an active network...

Hi Karen (and everyone)
I'm a professional musician who has in the last couple of years gotten involved in web design and online promotion. There are a lot of pitfalls to avoid in web design, and it's tough to know them all unless you're doing it yourself. A very typical one is to design a site that relies heavily on graphics for most or all of the content and navigation. People who can't or don't enable images when they surf (blind people with text-to-speech converters, users of the Lynx browser, people who turn off images for speed) won't be able to see your cool content or get around your site. Text also gives search engines more ways to reference your site. I always include text links and content when I design; all the major web portals such as Yahoo and Amazon do this as well.
Second, if you have a CD or other product for sale make it *really* easy for people to buy it. Don't, for example, make it so people have to e-mail you to ask how much a CD is and how they can order one. Give them the price and an address to send checks to right on your page. Better yet, put a "one click" credit card buying option on your page. (e-mail me if you're interested in how to do this). Last, if you have CDs for sale at an online store and want to link to them, link to the exact page your CD is for sale, not to the home page of the store. The more steps you make your buyers take the more likely they're going to get frustrated and give up.
