just played a gig last night and have had several run ins in the past with a 'too cool for school' soundman named Giles,

anyhow the deal is that i use an LP jam block just floating above my snare in the gap between rack tom and hi hat, and interchange it with a tambourine, so we set up and giles proclaims 'is this block going to stay there?' (why the hell do you think i set it up doofus) he wanted me to move it to another part of the kit cos he was having difficulty miking up my snare, so i produced my plan B, a clip on snare mic (akg418)
Giles then says 'we don't use AKG's here so you'll have to move the block'
solution a: i give giles a smack and tell him to grow up
solution b: (which i used) take off block and let him set up, when he went to his desk swapped his 57 for my akg and added block,
then spent the night hearing him say what a great snare sound he has got me!!
only once we finished playing do i point out that i have switched mics and that he should be more accomadating to drummers who use percussion in there set up
you know i just wanna earn a living doing something i love and this arsewipe and many others like him just steal a bit of that enjoyment away from me!!

i've had this issue.. i have a odd setup, so i have taken the steps to get all my own mic's / mounts to make it easier. now and then i get a sound man that wont use my gear. my mics are usually as good if not better then what the house can provide. i used to use a may mic internal kick mount without a hole in my front head. i actually stoped using it because i was sick of explaining it to sound guys.. same with my sen e602 clip on tom mics. if it's a mic that is newer or one they dont know, some dont want to try it.. i'd say if it sounds bad it would be the drummers fault anyways, let them use there gear.. now i can understand if it's a 10 band lineup or something like that.

nope 1 band only he's just a bit arsey, they are very typically like this in london, i mean asking me to move things around the kit to suit him!!
what next asking the guitarist not to play his e sting!!
telling the singer not to hold his mic in his left hand?
there is always at least one a month i have to contend with!

It's a common thing with sound guys. Not all, but many.

They think you, the musician, are there to serve them. They don't get that their PA systems are supposed to provide sonic support for the band. You'll hear comments like "too many players think it's still Woodstock, they don't understand the requirements of modern audio" and other BS.

I've known quite a few good sound guys in my time. They accomodate the band and still manage to get a good monitor mix AND good FOH mix. They are the ones who truly know their craft. Wish more were like that.

Sounds like the only block that needs to be moved is the one in his head.
