I saw a guy using one of these kits at an outdoor cafe when I was at SXSW this year. (Strangely enough, so was Elijah Wood!) The kit looked and sounded great.

And I found this:

I'm very tempted to go with an 18" kick with my next kit. Better fits the music I'm playing these days, and anyway, I tend to trigger my kick drum for louder gigs.

Anyone have familiarity with NDC drumkits?

I have to admit I know nothing about NDC drums. I do know about 18" kick drums though and I used mine for its first gig the other night. I put a SKII with a Regulator reso head on and it sounded wonderful! The soundman threw a mic on it (don't ask me what kind) and this little cannon suprised the entire band. Believe it or not...it is a cheap Catalina club kit made out of mahogony wood. I'm assuming that NDC drums are a higher quality custom label so you should have no problem with that kick drum. The best thing about an 18" drum kit is that setting up and tearing down is quick and easy.

One of my kits is a Mapex mahogany kit with an 18" kick. While my primary use of this kit was a small kit for rehearsals and small jazz gigs, I've also used this kit to play country - and the kit records very well(although I would not likely want to do a heavy rock type gig).

I don't have any hands on with NDC drums - but an 18" kick can produce a very good sound - choice of heads can be very important!
