i use my cracked cymbals for practice and rehearsals thus extending the life of my new ones!!
so cracked cymbals do have a valid use

They usually sound fine at first, but it does suck to watch a friend die as the crack spreads.

You both are very right, they do (as said by MK1) have a valid use, and they don't sound bad... at first. so there are many different opinions for cracked cymbals \:\)

I had a cracked ride-cymbal once that did not sound good. I took a saw and just "sawed the crack away" (donīt know how to put it). I think it sounds ok now!

I'm not a drummer...

But if you drill a small hole at the end of the crack...it will not travel any further.

(I have a nice studio kit...just picked up another bunch of Zildjian's for it, on eBay.)

drilling holes or cutting out the crack will usually work- for a while. Eventually a cracked cymbal will die.

Long Island Drum Center is one store that accepts used or cracked cymbals for trade in. I think the story is that the cymbal manufacturers can melt them down again and that the high silver content means the metal has some real value.
