Hi deathdrummer,

When I started out at 7years old I had my first set of sticks in my hand. My brother had a band, and the drummer saw I was looking at his playing on the set while they were practicing in my dad's basement. At the end of the session the drummer handed me a pair of his spare sticks that were bent. Man was I excited!!!

Well, I started beating on my dad's books in the living room. I realized that they made different sounds. It had taken me several years playing like that before I had my first set of real drums that my parents bought me at the age of 14.

I wasn't that good but I kept it up and soon I felt that I was ready to play out. I used to practice 10 hr's on Saturday'd and 3 to 4 hrs every other day during the week. In time I was like a clock. Didn't do a lot of stuff but was a time piece. I used to put several Jazz albums on my dad's stereo set that was hooked to a speaker installed in between the joists in the basement. I tried to copy all of the drummers on the albums. Man was I tired! \:D

So I guess we all have to start somewhere. However, you need to start off slow and don't do too many rolls, etc. that will hinder you from keeping time like a time piece. Once you learn how to keep perfect time, then you should begin to add the frills to your drum playing. This way little by little you will see how to get back in time efficiently during a song after doing drum rolls, etc.

I will never forget those begining years. :p

Just a thought or two.

Waaaaaaaaaay, long ago, my dad had a lot of 55 gal drums in his backyard. Being the enterprizing kind, I rolled a bunch of em to one place, got my little tape recorder going by a window, and grabbed a nice pair of wooden sticks and had at 'em for a while. At the time I thought it sounded sooooo cool. \:\) In reality, it must have sounded like crap. :p
