I also have a Tama kit (but I'd kill for Yamaha Oak Customs); however, I'm a Zildjian man through and through.

You have to look for sales and be selective. I've also been able to pick up some great cymbals (most notably a 17" Zildjian and an 18" Paiste) used for around 50 bucks at Buffalo Drum Outlet. If you go used, though, you have to check the equipment very carefully, of course.

Yeah, a lot of times you can find great cymbals in pawn shops. A lot of older cymbals are hard to identify, so it can be hard for the store to determine their market value, and a non musician (like a pawn shop owner) wouldn't necessarily be able to tell the gems from the clunkers - but you can.
I've got a Gretsch kit myself and love it... and all Zildjian cymbals. The drummer in my band just got himself a Ludwig Fab Four kit in Mod Orange - it sounds awesome!

Favorite brand anything would be silly. Unless you're an endorsee or you're rich, you ought be looking for these qualities: - sound - features - reliability - price
and absolutely disregarding whether the brand name you've chosen meets the approval of the herd.
My current kit's Yamaha, but I've owned Ludwig and PureCussion in the past and got good use from them. And my current cymbals come from Sabian, Paiste, Zildjian, Atlas and Wuhan.

But anything thats handmade usually has a big price bump..

Heh... You wouldn't be a Phil Collins fan would you? Looks like his setup from the 70s and 80s, except you'd need a china at the end of the chain there. I always loved the look of his kit.

I always loved the look of his kit. I love Phil Collins, also David Garabaldi - there is just something about the way he plays funk... but then again I love a lot of different drummers - different styles - they all have something to offer....... you just have to listen and learn.

Tama Imperialstars with Zildjian and Sabian cymbals. Have had this kit since the late 70's.
