I'm not a drummer, but I want a simple midi drum trigger for a home studio so I (or should I say, my drum playing friends)can sequence drum parts with more natural feel, and use it to trigger samples from other programs like BFD. I'd also like the ability to patch in a kick drum and high-hat "thingy" into it. I was thinking about a Yamaha DD55 or Roland SPD-S. I know the DD55 allows for the add-ons, but I don't know about the SPD-S. Any suggestions?

I'm quite sure the Roland will have some trigger in's on it. They've always had a least a few going all the way back to the original Octopad.
I think the Roland unit would be a good choice.
The Yamaha unit looks like a toy to me. If you miss a pad, you'll run the risk of cracking the plastic case.
Other units worth strong consideration are the DrumKAT or TrapKAT. Gum rubber tiggers, plenty of pads. Good stuff. However, they will likely be more expensive, and have no on board sounds. But if you want nice feel, those would be really good choices.
You can learn more about them here: https://www.alternatemode.com/trapkat_main.shtml

Look for a second hand SPD20... nothing spectacular but they do the job, and yes you can plug in pedal triggers

And the SPD20 has sounds that don't suck. I have a Drumkat2.0. I love it, and got it for about $250 IIRC.
