Not like I have the money, or anything.
$799.00...with hardware. with

Not like I have a justifiable need for them, either.

Yet.

Oh, nononononononnono...I did not get them.

I want them. This is the first kit/brand other than DW that I've wanted in about 15 years.

Spencer: That might not work, this time. You see, this same store is the one where I walked in--oddly enough, about this time last year, now that I think about it--just on a whim 'cause I was bored and had the afternoon wide open, and walked out stunned by an '03 Vintage Player Series Strat in my favorite gold color. Later, at home, I mentioned it to her, just in casual "What'd you do today?" kind of conversation.
She said: "I think you should go get it. It's not often something strikes you like that. I don't think you should pass it up."
I am much poorer now than I was last year at this time. Plus, I've no room for them.

coyote: I have a set...'70 red sparkle Ludwigs that my parents got me for my birthday in '74.
Trouble is, I also have something I'm going to try for (a goal, if you like), and as much as I love my Luddy's--and as dependable as they've been--they won't stand up to what I'd need them to, nor would they make the kind of impression that I need them to.
I also wouldn't mind a newer sound, maybe some more modern bearing edges.

I had a maple 5pc Ludwig, 60s vintage. It left me many years ago, in favor of a PureCussion fold-up portable set.... last year I picked up a Yamaha Stage Custom double-bass kit on blowout at my local superstore. It sounds awesome! The 17x22 bassdrums need no mufflers to get a modern sound - they sound like cannons.
My drummer's very happy with them, and he no longer has to move his kit to rehearse with us:

offramp, I've lusted after Yamahas ever since I played my first drum teacher's kit. To this day, that was the best sounding bass drum, at least to my ears.

That lust has been at a fever pitch ever since Yamaha started making their Oak Classics.

I've been the same way about DW, until this.

Remembered the other day; an old roommate of mine is a Yamaha Percussion rep. Hmmmmm.....

Offramp, tell the wife that you went out to get some drum hardware and say........."opps, look what came with the hardware!!!" HAHA. Take it from me, the older you get the harder it is to justify them. I wore the wife down getting gear, she gave up a long time ago and thinks I'm just nuts now.

Sell your current kit. Buy the new kit.
800 bucks seems pretty reasonable for that kit you're lusting for.

I figured my next kit would cost me 3 grand.....which is why I haven't bought it yet. I'm cheap! I don't even own drum cases! Every time I went to the store to by cases, I left with a new Ride cymbal!

I still play my Yamaha Stage that I bought in '85. They sound fine. I purchased a Pork Pie 6x12 maple snare. It's a sassy little mutha, but I can get a big whack out of it too. Damn nice snare.

Someday I'll upgrade the toms and kick to some D Dub's, or maybe Pork Pie, but my Yamaha's have really dun me proud over the last 20 years. And more than paid for themselves. I sure can't say that about any of the rest of my gear!!!

That kit was my eleventh birthday present in '74. It's not going anywhere.

$800 is certainly a nice price for that Yammy; it's not nice, though, when you've been out of work for a year and a half.

Eek!
Don't get nasty! I understand sentimental value. I'm just saying, if you want something you'll probably have to give something up to get it.

Lucky for you, you must have room for two kits, man. I haven't had room for a drumset in my house since the kids were born. It's a drag! Someday we'll expand or buy a bigger house, but that won't be for a while.

Okay, how about gigs. You got any gigs? Go play 8 gigs at a hundred a piece, and you'll have your kit. Less taxes, of course.

Hate to say it but Super8's on-target here.

I loved my old Ludwigs. But the ONLY time I miss 'em anymore is times like right now, when discussing the sentimental/collector's aspect of things. All other times, the awesome sound of the Yamaha set makes me forget the sentiment of the old Ludwigs.

There's actually a story behind that pic....

I'm lefty. (Though I play guitar righty, lol) When I set up a kit it's a mirror-image of a righty's set - floor toms on the left, hihat on the right. But my drummer plays all convoluted. He's lefty but likes the hihat on the left; makes for a strange setup.

But that pic was taken the day after a guest drummer sat in - he's righty and likes a smaller kit so he simply pivoted the 14" mounted tom out of the way! Yeah, you'd have to be extraodinarily dexterous to play that full set as pictured.

so the floor tom is just on the right because it has no place on the left where the hi-hat is, and the drummer is a crossbreed of left and right handed, on the toms he is left handed, with the foot he is ambidexter, and on the hat he is right handed or does he play the hi-hat with the left or both hands... \:D

did i get it?
